I am new to reloading and would like advice on the following...

A mild target load for fun shooting targets...

A good hunting load for deer and moose at ranges under 150 meters.
Please note I do not want too much recoil.

thanks...

Yes a 300 gr. bullet will give less recoil(depending on velocity) it may however, not give as much penetration as you would like. The 45/70 is well known for good penetration, and most factory, jacketed bullets that are this light are hollowpoints and may expand too quickly for game larger than deer.

What rifle??

Had real good results with 405gn jacketed bullets.
If your useing a Marlin GG you will want to seat the bullet to the ridge ahead of the crimping groove that give you the correct OAL.
I won't give powder charge because don't know what strength gun you have, but I have always had best results with 4198 in the 45-70.

lever action yes...

I want a marlin 45 70 guide gun.
We all know how good it is for any big game within say 150 yards.

I wonder can I down load it so it is fun to target shoot too?
Or not be too much on a deer at short range.

So I was asking any of the 45 70 guys:

what their favorite mild loads for fun shooting are?

what their favorite short range deer loads are?

what their favorite bear stoping loads are?

thanks

My favourite mild load is a 405 Gr LEE RNFP over 25.5 grains of SR 4759, it will group at around 1 1/4 inches at 100 yds with aperture sights in my highwall. I would not hesitate on using it for deer or bear (hunting) at 150 yds or less.

My moose and bear load would not be suitable in a Marlin as it is max for the Ruger #3 I shoot it out of. It is a 350 gr Speer Hotcore over a "boot load" of Alliant RX-7. This will group sub moa at 100yds, but recoil will bring tears to ones eyes off the bench - not so bad when standing. Velocity is 2300 fps.
