Hi all,

Looking for some advice on factory 44 mag ammo for moose. The conditions I plan on using this gun in will rarely if ever present a shot greater then 75m. Most shots would be under 50. Federal makes a 300gr cast bullet and a 280gr Swift A - frame. Any other factory offerings?

Stick with the 280 swift a frame ,get as close as you can ,then get closer.

I personally would be hesitant to use anything lighter than 280 grain ,but ya know the biggest grizzly was killed by a native woman with a 40 grain 22 long rifle bullet

Why a .44 Magnum for Moose? If you own one and cannot afford a more powerful round, okay, I get it. But, I would not choose it if other options are available.

This could be said for anything. Theres always a bigger gun.

The .44 mag is capable, if, like any gun, its limitations and the limitations of the shooter are adhered to.

I have other choices, I just was inquiring about the .44 at this time

Well said.
For your ranges up to 75 to 100 yards, at least, the 44 magnum in a rifle is more than adequate. People forget that a rifle will shoot the same bullets 250 t0 300 fps faster, than will the same cartridge in a revolver. Thus, it becomes considerably more pwerful than a 30-30. And for many years it was considered that the 30-30 had killed more moose than any other smokeless cartridge.

im looking into the options for 44 mag ammo too, I plan on using my 44 mares leg for most of my big game hunting this coming season, I realize the limitations and practice my shooting on rabbits daily. its as close as you can get to hunting with a handgun in canada so i want to give it a try for atleast a season. it also weighs 4 pounds fully loaded and in my new leg holster from wanstalls, I dont even notice the gun there.

but what's the verdict?
i have a box of vortx copper 225 grains and a box of american eagle 240 grain soft points. i know theyll both work for deer but for moose?

and can some one clarify the regulation on buffalo bore ammo like the 305 grain hard cast lead solid big game handgun bullets, they are built for deep penetration but i dont think they expand and bc regs state that you are not allowed to use non expanding bullets. i thought they might be a good choice for the larger game.

^I salute anyone's support for handgun hunting to some day be an accepted legal practice in this country.
But I don't think it should be from a basis of experience with a firearm that is niether a carbine nor is it a full fledged handgun.
IMO, in it's as is form, it really belongs on the silver screen with Josh Randall in a western hollywood production circa 1956, and that's about it.
I sincerely apologize if I have offended anyone.

my opinion only

I would imagine you're good to go with hard cast. Its at least plausible for them to expand. Smack a moose shoulder with one of those and it'll flatten out a bit. I would say that full metal jackets are what they are trying to keep people from hunting with.
