I've never had the nerve to shoot off my horse. But it is a great way to hunt. Surprising how much more you see being a bit higher up. Like a walking treestand.....

Shooting a centerfire rifle while on a horse is probably best left to John Wayne.;)

Some friends in Yorkton used to train their horses to allow shooting from the mounted position. Basically, they signal the horse of the intent to shoot by squeezing them with their legs. The horse tenses up and becomes still, then they take a couple chunks of 2x4 and slap them together over the horses head. Apparently it takes some training, but when finished, the horse will tense and prepare for the shot on comand.

Gotta think there are quite a few days where you land flat on your back after slapping the 2x4's together.

It doesn't take "nerve" to shoot from a horse, it takes "non-sense". Game will allow you a much closer look as long as you stay on, once you dismount, well then you're just another human. Horses also make for another good set of eyes and a good nose. In close quarter, my horses' reactions and behaviour often disclose something that I may have missed. And like huntinstuff says, being another 3-4 feet taller is a bonus. Like they say, there's nothing better for the inside of a man than the outside of a horse. :)
