Loading .40 S&W with Hodgdon Clays

Thanks again for all the replies. I'll try it again at 3gn when we know the chrono is right. Next time we go out will take some rounds loaded with 231 that we know are right.
 
trevor,..You could try pulling one of those .40 loaded rounds I sold you,..examine it,etc..try and duplicate it if the OAL is good for the Glock.
A local standard shooter just committed to all my Silhouette, but I still have accurate # 5.

44 magnum with an 8 inch will give 1065 with 5.5 grains of clays I very much doubt 3 grains pushing the same bullet can give you 1700.
 
So there is no question that the chronograph was the problem. I used a different one and with 3.0 and 3.2 I got a power factor of 141 and 143. I'm going to try a few more test up to 3.5. Should be interesting.

sounds about right.

but be carefull clays will go up very quickly in pressure as you near maximum loads ie one load may be safe and .2 more powder would be dangerous.

I know a Glock won't handle rounds that are loaded long enough to safely get to Major PF with Clays.

Loading long SUBSTANTIALLY lowers the pressure. When I used loads that were major PF with Clays (and loaded long) the brass flowed and there were impressions of the fluted chamber on the brass (my gun barrel has a fluted chamber). Factory loads don't leave impressions of the fluted chamber on the brass.

This means the Clays loads were very high pressure.

I felt uncomfortable using these loads and switched to Titegroup for an extra margin of safety.
