Hey there folks recently picked up a carbine chambered in .45 acp

I was testing rounds with the crony and noticed a few things...

Blazer , Pmc and fiocci 230g FMJ all clearly gained 170-200 fps MV vs being fired from a 5 inch Taurus -

I had loaded 100 rounds with 5.5g titegeoup using the 230g XTP by hornady.... they shot very well and carried more MV then the other premade ammo again almost jumping to 1200 fps.

I wonder since I'm shooting from an 18 inch barrel , could I gain Better fps and reduced pressure from a slightly slower burning powder ?

I am going to do some testing regardless , just curious if anyone else has tried this before.

Here's a pic of some of the test rounds , so far I'm happy with these hand loadkngs but the search for something tailored for longer barrel keeps me wondering...

subbing as I am also looking at this, but for 9mm.

I am working on using max loads of HS-6 with various bullets and OAL.

I don't have a chrono, so I have to go by drop at distance.

Drop at distance is easy(ier) with heavy pistol rounds as the drop is just so damn obvious as your velocity changes....

Going from 900 fps to 1175 fps with a 230 grain round is no joke as it really flattened the trajectory within 100 meters

Something like a 9 inch drop vs 5 inch drop!

I'm looking at maybe getting a conversion to shoot 9mm too

A 230 grain xtp going 1200 fps is VERY good for .45. That will leave quite an impact on just about anything. I think that any gains you make over that will be quite moot.

I agree completely... 230grain projectile floating at 1150+ is like a flying ashtray...

My thoughts for improving the load would be focusing on the powder and primer factors

Pistol powder from what I know about its properties ; it's very fine, which facilitates a faster burn, which is what you'd want from 5 inches or less of barrel length -- with a slightly slower burning powder I was thinking I could maintain the same +1150 fps with less pressure curve.... since ive got a longer barrel I could afford to ramp up the pressure slower without worrying about un-ignighted powder...

Just a thought

I use 16-17gr of AA#7 under a cast LEE 230grTL TC in my LeMag conversion M1-Carbine in 45 Win Mag
Average velocity is 1464 with, 1094ft lbs

5.5 of TiteGroup is a +p load.

If you want to try a slower powder:
7.4 Power Point

7.0 Unique
7.5 N350
10.7 AA7
8.5 AA5

Sounds good , looks like I will have to pickup some various powders to test.

Ohhh that 45 mag sounds like it packs quite a punch!

Split's wooden stock's in 30-40 rds. I have it in a Choate side folder now. Great to bring while blueberry picking

any chance you fine fellahs have some loads like that for 9mm Luger?

I worked up some hotter 9mm loads with Longshot, and compared performance in my handgun vs a 10.5" AR. Got some good speed increase with the 9mm Major load. Haven't tested these for accuracy at 50yds/100yds yet though. I was thinking about running one of these loads in 3-gun, so that will be next.

i used to load my 124 grain 9mm at 4.7 grains of unique for my trojan. I tried the same loads in my sub2k and every mag i would get jams. I upped the load all the way to 5.8, which is safe according to alliants manual, and no more jams and no signs of over pressure. Good accurate loading
