Loading a 300 to behave like a 30-06

Found my old Winchester model70 .30-06 ( 1964 MODEL) shooting 220grainers kicked harder than my SAVAGE in 300win mag......... as far as reloading reduced loads in a .300,
inform yourself well from powder makers/established reloader manuals........you could get into trouble. be safe

A thing of the past for me, have acquired enough rifles that when i want a 30-06, i take a 30-06.

Yup, I agree. I started out making my one center fire rifle work for everything - happened to be a push feed Win Model 70 in 308 Win. Only ever loaded 165 grain HotCor at 2,800 fps. I've used it to take gophers, jackrabbits, white tail, mule deer, and a cow elk. Never did get a coyote or fox with it. Today, I have 223 Rem, 243 Win, 6.5x55, 7x57, 308 Win, 30-06, 8x57, 338 Win Mag, 9.3x62, 45/70 and 458 Win Mag. If you want "x" fps from "y" grains of "z" diameter bullet, just get the appropriately chambered rifle. Bullet placement counts 80%; bore diameter counts 10%, bullet post-impact performance counts 10%. Brand of rifle, scope rings or scope, cartridge, muzzle velocity, brand of bullet pretty much take up the rest of the equation.

Just to satisfy my curiosity I loaded up some 170 gr. 30/30 bullets over 43 to 44 gr. I4895 in my 30/06 this Fall. Velocity was probably about 2400 to 2500 fps. This is within the range which Hornady says they are usable. Took a deer with it with no trouble.
