loading down a 22-250

that is what most guys donot understand . it is the throat the hardens on most high power rifles . it will get a glaze and get so hard the in just lets the bullet slip right by .i shoot a 264 win mag put hundereds of rounds thru it . i will most likley never burn out the barrel hunting and playing around . i love the 22 250s as well great guns DUTCH

Remember it is the weight of powder and resulting heat that burns the barrel, not the velocity. Barrels burn out at the throat where the bullet has very little velocity, and not at the muzzle where it has full velocity.

this is excellent! I had heard that it was H4895 but had never read a confirmed source.

This overbore chart gives you a rough idea of the barrel life compared to other calibers, there are other factors to take in concern ie shooting pace, load used, etc. Running a barrel life formula I found on Accurateshooter.com I have found that loading near max loads with 50gr bullets and H4895 will giva you approximately 1350 rounds of accurate barrel life. Using 70gr bullets should give you about 450 more rounds since they burn less powder


Since it is the reloading forum I think it makes perfect sense to discuss light loads, cause after all, if you bought a Ferrari, would you drive it at 300km/h everyday on every road?

No.

The throat literally burns away. It doesn't harden and let the bullet slip past. That is physically impossible from the way that rifle barrels are constructed, and the way that bullets interact with them.
 
15gr of Blue Dot with a 40gr bullet will get you about 3300fps from a 26" .22-250. Perfect for high volume gophers. Just make sure you don't double charge the case. Throw a charge and seat a bullet, throw a charge then seat the bullet...
 
just picked up a 22-250. I'm going to reload with 55 gr lead and 4320. anyone use this combo and how grns of power are you using.
 
Loading to low can be more detrimental than running average loads as the neck on the cartridge might not seal. If it were me i would just run normal loads, my opinion fwiw.
 
Heard that barrel burning rumor

20 years ago when I bought my first 22-250 and I have literally put thousands of rounds down the barrel and it still shoots fine. I also have slow twist in my 22-250's and found tighter groups from slower loads in at least the 50 and 55 grain bullets.
I have been using 31 grains of IMR 4895 for probably the last 12-15 years just because I don't need 3600-3800 fps for coyotes and gophers.
3400 fps is more accurate in my rifles with 26 inch barrels and 14 twist.

Just to add my $0.02, I just overcame a keyholing issue from too light a load and that was from middle of the road LEE data using H4895. Whatever you do, make up small loads. It sucks to pull 100 bullets!
 
I have a friend who I have known for 5 years. In that time he has burned the barrels of three guns. 1st a Remington 700 sps in 17 fireball. 2nd a Savage lrpv in 22-250. And 3rd a Remington 700 vssf that is rapidly losng accuracy. He is one of those people who likes to push the envelope so to speak. Hot loads "I can get 10 more fps out of this" was his favorite saying. I prefer to be consevative with my loads. Light loads usually shoot better anyway. Just dont go to light you can run into trouble there to.

I am not a fan of underloading cartridges.

In my experience, cartridges perform best close to the max they are designed for.

To use the Ferrari example, if you chug along at 30 MPH all the time in second gear running on regular fuel, buy a honda.
 
I like to do both, if a barrel wears out, oh well there are lots of other guns and barrels to be had.

Reduced loads are fantastic for teaching new shooters, especially children, Fill a 30/06 case with trail boss and a 180 grain lead bullet and tell me its not fun....

What loads do you use for the 17FB and the .223? I had some Trailboss recipes for the FB and lost them somewhere. Also wondering about the .223 and what the results are like with that one.

loads for TB are easzy to develop. there are a lot of cartridges with published loads, for those that aren't, from the Hogdon website, fill case to where the bottom of a seated bullet will be, weigh, take 70% of that as your starting load and work up or down, depending on speed you are trying for. You cannot get enough Trail Boss in a bottleneck cartridge to create an over pressure situation.

For the 17 FB max is 6.3 grains, 3.7 grains and a 20 grain V max is doing 1850 FPS. Nice quiet load, will shoot well under an inch at 100 yards, great for vermin in more built up areas where noise is an issue. With the V-max bullet, no richochettes like you can get with a 22.

4.8 grains is 2650 FPS, so same speeds as the HMR.

In the 223 3.7 grains of Trail Boss and a 55 grain V-max or a 50 grain SPSX bullet is subsonic, at about 1000 FPS. This is a very quiet load. Out of my 26" barrel you can barely hear it, sounds like a CCI 22LR cap round. Very good groups, I use this for 100 yards and under for quiet shooting.
 
just looked up the 30-06 load with trailboss,150gr nos bt.velocity should be just over 1000 ft/sec.make up some of those,take them to camp.give them to my brother for his rifle.i bet they would kill a deer at 50 to 75 yards.i might load some fore mine as well for the kids to shoot at the range.might even make good coyote rounds out to about 100 yards.

I load my 308 with 4 grains of TB and a 44 grain, .310 Hornady Muzzle loader Round ball. They make great chicken loads that are effective out to 50 yards for when you are big game hunting and they are a low noise no kick fun thing for kids to shoot. The 150s with TB will work good for chicken too, it just you can buy 100 of the RBs for $9. Most of the 30 Caliber jacketed bullets don't open up very good at 1000 fps. If you want some expansion try bullets designed for the 30-30, like Hornadys Leverlution bullets or soft lead cast bullets.
