Way back in 1905 was a 7mm (.287) Magnum that reached 2900 fps with a 150 gr bullet !

It was a Canadian invention called the 280 Ross.

In 1910 the M 10 came out. Recently I bought two rifles, both 1910s. I'm keeping the 28" barreled Highland Stalking Rifle.

Happily C&H makes dies and cases are available from Buffalo Arms. Woodleigh maks 2 weights of .287 bullets.

Cases can be made from 375 Ruger but they are almost as expensive as the Buffalo Arms ones (made from 50-110).

After a lot of figuring, I found that the 280 Ross can be loaded with 7mm RemMag starting loads.

You can load .284 bullets but in my less than perfect bore, they about double group size. So far I'm gettin 3 shot 1" groups @50 yards with the .287 bullets which, considering the cordite and corrosive primer abused bore is amazing.

Of you have one, get it shooting again.

I presume the "Highland Stalking Rifle" is a .280 "Deerstalker" Pics (for both) please once you have status.
IFF you intend to carry on in Rosses (you seem to be starting well) a copy of "The Ross Rifle Story" from Bob McCormick @ castregd@primus.ca at approx. C. $110. (Not the idiot price advertised on this site awhile back).

I think that one has to become at least a "team member". See "Team membership" at the top of the home page.
Then use "go advanced" when replying and just follow the prompts at the bottom of the page when posting and upload pics etc.
!3 years since I figured it out so others please chime in if I pooched.
Merry Christmas all

Very nice to see this post - been considering a 280 Ross for some time, but the scarcity of ammo & reloading components makes me hesitate. I have tried to obtain other brass from Buffalo Arms before, but with respect to shipping to Canada: "Foreign Orders: If your order has brass, bullets, guns, gun parts or any item that can not be shipped without an export permit ... " (see their website). So I guess you have to make your own cases, but where do you buy .287 bullets in Canada?

Cheers!

You have caught the attention of Oldguncrank with this thread. He is a wealth of knowledge regarding the Ross Rifle and the 280 Ross.
Myself, I am fairly new to the game and have but 3 examples of the Ross M10 in 280 Ross. I have tinkered quite a bit with reloading for them and have had varied results. Truth be told, I have better results with my 1905 R or any of my sporterized MKIII rifles in 303 Brit as far as accuracy and consistency go.
For a parent case for the 280 Ross, I have used 300H+H cases and now 375 Ruger. The process of forming 280 Ross from either of these parent cases is a bit involved.
I have yet to try but after a bit of research I think that the 28 Nosler case shows good potential as a parent case for 280 Ross. Regardless, it will not be cheap to make ammunition but it is worth the effort to have these great old rifles back in the field.
Cheers
Enjoy the journey.

I put the images in a file on my own computer and draw from there.
Works for me.

Way cool. I collected R.F. Sedgley rifles, once had 32. Among them a Steyr 95 straight pull in 30-40.

Now down to 4 deluxe 03' models: 22 Hornet (short action), 22-06, 6.5x66 and 400 Whelen.

Someday I may be able to post photos.
