I'm new to 3 gun and am trying to set up my gear. I am also starting to practice loading. I have a Remington 870 and noticed that its hard to line up a shell to load in the mag when there is no shell in the chamber. Is the correct procedure to load one in the chamber first, close the action then load rounds in the mag? This would also support the idea of not letting the gun run dry before reloading. Is it okay to load the chamber first or is it a DQ because you are manipulating the gun while it loaded?

Okay, so I figured it out. Action has to be closed or the loading lifter travels past the magazine loading port. This gun is new to me so I haven't even shot it or even loaded live rounds in it.

Depends.

If it's an empty start... After the "beep" you can pretty much do what you want loading-wise.
If it's a loaded start you'll be under the direct supervision of the RO so... Yeah, if the stage brief say's "start fully loaded" you start fully loaded which usually means chamber loaded, mag loaded, safety on.
Mid stage, while you're runnin' an' gunin' load in any safe manner. ie don't break 180 deg.

3Gun is pretty much always about manipulating a loaded gun...

Yes, for a 'tactical reload' leave one in the tube. It adds needless seconds to your time if you run it dry. Keep it with one in the tube. Control your muzzle and finger off the trigger.

How do you figure that?

John
If you run your pump empty, you either have to:
-close the action to drop the lifter before flipping the shotgun to load rounds and then rack an empty chamber, or
-put a shell in the ejection port before closing the action and flip the gun;
either way it's much faster to leave one in the chamber and load the mag tube. I have many:redface: gopro vids of myself running the gun dry at the wrong time...

Thanks. This sounds like the way to go.
