Loading the Lee Enfield without chargers.

Okay, I know this might be a stupid question;

How do I properly load my Enfield if I don't have any chargers? Last time I tried, didn't have any success. The next round would not feed into the chamber. I ended up having to load each round into the breech by hand (kind of defeats the "repeater" nature of the gun).

Same I find even with my M/38 Swedish Mauser.

I was going to add a Rimming joke, but never mind...:D

??? I'm not sure what you mean. If the charger is correctly loaded, it's the same from both ends.
 
I've got a scope mount on mine so chargers are out for me... But I have a 5 round magazine so every turn I shoot I'd like to use all of the rounds in the magazine (even if that does cost me $5 hahaha). Although the last round in the magazine never feeds very well... It angles up further then all of the other rounds do and it misses the spout unless I am very forceful with the action, and even then it frigs up sometimes.
 
Jgam Try pressing on the top round in the mag several times. This will correct if any rounds have the rim behind the one below it.
 
Must have loaded a gazillion rounds in # 4's and mostly no chargers.Chargers were used almost entireley in action . Pull the mag and stuff em in 1 at a time,ALLWAYS rim in front of rim. If the last round cocks up it's usually bad follower or f--ked spring,never loaded a five round clip.I shot competative serice rifle for 20 years. Duker
 
Thanks for all the responses guys. The rim in front of rim makes sense to me hand loading the mag.

I was at the range yesterday afternoon and still not doing something right. On both rifles, I load the mags fine, but when I push the bolt forward, a cartridge is not "stripped" from the mag. The bolt just travels over the mag. Does the expended cartridge, being pulled backwards before being ejected, "bump" the next round up? Does the above make any sense.

Had a hoot never the less. Windy as heck and cold. But hit the metal paddle at 200 yards once. Loads of fun.

That happens to me if I don't push the magazine completely up into the rifle. I have to push down the magazine release as far as it will go, push the magazine itself up into the rifle all the way, then release the magazine catch.

I can only get them to feed one way. Am I missing something when loading the clips?:confused:
 
Loading the charger ( like below ) will allow you to place the charger in either way . I don't know how it works , but it does , and thats how it's ment to be loaded. The Lee Enfield magazine is intended to come out for cleaning only .
Stagger the rounds so the rims fit as shown below , with the rounds in front in a exsagerated but correct , position.

Sometimes the lips of the mag may get bent inwards and you may need to ( ever so slightly ) bend them outwards until you can get a better feed .
From the sounds of the prob here , it does kinda describe a mag thats not all the way in .
The "species" of Enfield wasn't said , so lets check you have the correct mag . In this photo the top mag is for the No.1 ( note the extra clip on the backspnie ) and the bottom is the No.4 mag .

When looking at a loaded magfrom the rear (out of the Rifle) the primer is visbile,if not bend the lips out a tad. Trial and error.The piont of the next round in the mag has to be low enough so that the rim of the round being extracted does not catch it. Again ,trial and error.Duker
 
Thanks again guys. Looking at them again, I think I didn't have the mag far enough into the well. It did "click" but I maybe didn't push it up far enough. I will be trying again when the weather warms up a bit.
