Hello CGN,

Does anyone have a recommended recipe for the 69 Gr Lapua Scenars in a .223 Remington?

Are there any known velocity nodes for these bullets?

I am loading to mag length at 2.260" and shooting them out of a 20" barreled rifle.

Thx.

I've found around 23gr of Varget is a consistent sweet spot for ~70gr weight class bullets. I've tried 4 different bullets between 69 and 77gr, and all were within +/- 0.5gr of 23gr. I don't chase velocity, but should get 2850-2900 without issue.

Thanks Alpheus.

Using your powder load data, Quickload tells me 23.0 grains of Varget is 106% of case capacity, with velocity of 2710 fps out of a 20" pipe and up near max pressure.

QL also shows me that 21.6 gr of Benchmark (97.3% case capacity) will give me an almost identical velocity at roughly the same max pressure.

I will give it a shot but work up from slightly lower.

I used to use Varget for the 69gr but it needed a compressed load and after a few months of storage I would get magazine jams because the bullets were being pushed out of the case. As a stick powder it also needed individually weighed charges which is a major pain.

Currently my favourite 69gr .223 load from a 20" barrel uses Winchester 748. CCI-41 & CCI-400 primers produced noticeably better accuracy with this load than Winchester WSP. 748 flows easily and accurately through a powder measure and fills the case but does not require a compressed load to reach max velocities.

I have been using 25.2 gr of N540 giving me 2930 fps from a CZ 527. Load taken from the Vihtavouri reloading data. Nice groups with it

I've yet to find a barrel(AR) that didn't like 25gr of Varget with 69gr seirra's. I have one match barrel that I had to re-work after about 7000 rounds and ended up at 25.9gr but was highly compressed.
