I've got a pound of Winchester W748 powder sitting here I got as part of a reloading lot a while back. What are some of the best applications for this powder? I'm finding it difficult to find load data specific to it although it does seem to turn up every now and then.

I'm currently loading for .270 Wby Mag, .30-06, and .243. Any pet loads for one of those using the W748? Hate to see it go to waste.

I'm on the road this weekend, so don't have my manuals handy, but I'm pretty certain that I used W748 for some of my .30-'06 reloads, along with .303 Brit and .308 Winchester. When I get back home, I'll check my range book to see what sort of results I got with W748.

hey jerry its very good for 30 30 too. other than that i don't think you will find it very useful. you might have to sell it to me cheap!!!!

I'm closer and quicker!!!
We use it under 170 round nose's and WLP primers. Same load shoot exactly the same in each of our 336's

I use it exclusively for 30-06 and .223. The Hornandy reloading manuals have info on it in them. If you are looking for loads for a specific bullet weight in 30-06, drop me a PM and I'll dig up what I can for you...

Never been much of a fan of ball powders myself. They tend to be hotter (due to nitro content), dirtier (more surface area == more coating/additives), more temperature sensitive, and generally harder to ignite.

WW-748 is quite suitable for most small to medium capacity cases.
I use it exclusively in my .22 PPC, .308 Win, and .30-06 with fine results; all are target or bench rest rifles.
Ball powders such as this are a dream to work with in a volumetric measure; they meter like water, very consistent.
True, they are more temperature sensitive than the single base extruded powders. Magnum primers are usually recommended with these powders............I use mild bench rest (Federal match grade) primers with WW-748 in the calibers mentioned with very consistent results.

This is exactly why I started using W748 to begin with...

Hmmm...

I may have to try it out in some '06 loads. What is the shelf life on this stuff? I'm not sure how old the powder is other than it is in the old can as opposed to the plastic jug. Should there be a date on the can somewhere do you figure?
