I've decided it's time to add an SKS to my collection. Where can I purchase a Russian model as well as a couple crates of ammo. Or which model of gun is the better one to buy?

If you want to pick it up in person, call one of the closer gunstores to ask if they've got any.....Al Simmons in Hamilton and Ellwood Epps around Orillia come immediately to mind.

To order one, you can try Tradeex, one of the sites sponsors, and proabaly a couple other places out West like Frontier Taxidermy or maybe Wolverine Supplies (also sponsors). Cabelas (formerly SIR) lists them, but my last experience with them was horrible. I got two rifles shipped to me in poorly packaged box, which resulted in one of the rifles arrriving with a cracked stock.... and that's only a small part of the hastles I had to go through with that order.

If you check previous threads, I think that some of the carbines came with mags that were somewhat crudely plugged in comparison to others, but that aside they should all be pretty good shooters. If collecting is your main motivation, you might have to pay a bit more for all matching or original (as opposed to arsenal refinished) specimens.

The one rifle that I've tried at the range shot nicely, though I'm glad that I picked up an SKS sight adjustment tool (which incidentally comes with the Tradeex rifles), as it helped to adjust an otherwise low shooting rifle to POA.

I also recommend picking up at least one or two cases of ammo, since once the current shipment's sold off, it's not clear whether we'll be getting more surplus from the Czech Republic. Further to places like Al Simmons or Elwood Epps, I've seen it on sale at Lebaron's and Silverdale range (you want to avoid mail order if you can, on account of the weight). At about $225 for 1140 rounds, that's the cheapest centrefire shooting you can get.

Regards,

Frank

I just picked a Russian up from epps in laminated stock very good condition for $230 they have been selling fast though. If your ordering online lever arms, trade ex, and wolverine all have some for good prices, all Russians. Epps also has crates off ammo for $180 i have seen it cheaper online but you could save the shipping cost.

Thanks for info all. I see them on Epps webb site which say ;Circa 1954, and seen others with ;Refinish. Mil Surplus arms are new to my collection, most mine are Hunting Sporter arms although I love every semi-auto I own. Are these SKS rifles used are they new? I do recall a friend who bought one 15 years ago it came in a box and the whole gun was packed in some type of grease, had a shell belt and even had info on hitting human targets on land and air distances in meters (huh eh) seamed new a little rough quality. Whats the history one these SKS's?

They're refurbished condition. I have bought 3 and they all seem about the same decent quality for $200.00 Bores are in good shape along with the Bolt and gas piston. Great deal, one of my favourites to shoot as it is so cheap.

Their Russian refurb's so there good shooters most of them should have new chrome lined barrels in them, and the one i bought was an unmarked one so i think that means it was a 55/56 its a nice looking gun none of its painted the barrel is blued and the bolt cover is silver. Mine came with an ammo pouch, oiler/pouch, cleaning kit, sling, and a few stripper clips.
