Lockhart Tactical Raven 9 thoughts, impressions and reviews

The website... I was half convinced that it was a scam site after it added items to my shopping cart that I hadn't even looked at. However, I did place an order for a demo builders kit in 556 and a day later I got an email from Canada Post saying that they had my package from Lockhart so I hope it was legitimate and I haven't been scammed.

If you ordered off their website you aren't being scammed. Ordered my Raven 9 off their website and it was shipped two days later. Not sure how difficult it is to order a carbine from them Click on the Raven 9 picture and you are on their order form fill in what you want for extras and go to checkout. ummmm my small motor skills even managed the clicking of the mouse, mind you I train regularly on the mouse.. :>)

I agree buying local might be better if this option is available. I was going to order from a private shop located in Alberta but the gun they had did not have all the options I wanted so there was no benefit in doing so.

If you are ordering a builder kit, its important to understand the three different lengths and what they mean by standard, mid and long.
Maybe that is explained somewhere in detail, but it isn't greatly detailed on the website. It becomes readily apparent once you fondle one and compare it to other stuff.
There also appear to be radio info buttons beside the options for an order that are not linked to anything, so if one comes across an option you are unsure about, you either 'hail mary' it or you need to dig around for the info on that option.

Well lets see what the new website brings. I phoned then when I had a question and got the info I needed about two months before u decided to order.

Ran it some more. It feeds my Campro 147gr loads from the supplied KCI mag, but no other mags will feed em.

Didn't have an issue with a few hundred SB 124 with any mags. The long stick magpul mag worked good with the SB 124.

So far so good.

Umm I got to go back to the range and rest my KCI mags again. I'm at 291 rds thru mine and it does run like a top with 125 gr RN BDX bullets using anything but Glock OEM mags. Only have 2 of those still so that is not an issue. I want to get some more 10 rd KCI mags as they are faster, for me, to reload than the stick mags. Going to try a light buffer with 115pf cartridges I use for CCP Division to use I. Local steel matches. We will see how she runs.

Purchased a Raven with both 223 & 9mm uppers. Does anyone know if they change the buffer weights? What weight are you guys running?

The buffer in my 9mm is 8 oz., with a slightly shorter spring - stock.
If you are doing a .223 build and keeping the carbine tube (assumed same lower), then a 3.5 - 5 oz. carbine length buffer and slightly longer carbine spring is what you may want to start with.

It seems the Korean stick ,mags handle the 147gr RNFP better than the 10 rd mags I have tried so far. I need to find a brand of 10 rd mags that run well with the 147gr RNFP. The shorter mags are faster to reload.

I put 161 rounds down range testing my limited mag collection. I was using 125gr BDX FMJ RN bullets over 4.5 gr 231. I was more interested in mag performance but it has to be said the bullets went where the sights and barrel were aiming.

My two OEM 10 rd Glock mags all choked on the first round or about mid way thru the 10 rd mag. I think it is a spring issue. The Glock mags I have appear to be lightly sprung.

KCI 10 rd mag worked flawlessly*
KCI 10/32 mag worked flawlessly
ETE 10 round mag worked flawlessly*
RWB Korean 10/30 mag ran flawlessly*
SHK Korean 10/30 mag ran flawlessly

The Raven 9 choked on 147 gr CanPro RNFP plated using asterisk noted mags above. All the OEM mags choked on the 147gr. Not a problem as I intend to use 125 gr BDX bullets in the gun exclusively. I'll try the 147 gr plated later at around the 500 rd count.

I have the Lockhart Comp/Brake on the gun so I have not tried my lead bullets on it. I may decide to remove the Comp/Brake for practice using my lead bullets. Not a real issue. I also will have the adjustable buffer here this week and I plan to weight the buffer 10 oz per CV32's comments and experience. Overall the gun has performed well.

Since when are bdx bullets 125g?

Put another 300 rounds through mine. Ran ok, but still not great. First round through the mag seems to occasionally want to 'porpoise' between receiver and top of chamber, and it doesn't appear to be mag specific. I'm thinking perhaps angle of the magazine and well in relation to the chamber is just enough with a pinned mag that has ever-so-slight difference in spring tension due to perhaps binding at the rivet. Re-visited OEM G17 10 rounders and they fed fine, but had some issues with mags dropping free.
Magazine release isn't consistent nor positive. I get that they have to work with the magazine as it is designed, but it goes from easily ejected to 'grip and rip' with no rhyme or reason.

One thing this thing has going for it is that practicing failure to function drills is varied and can be unexpected - which spices things up.

Had my first problem with my Raven today. Charging handle broke off in the bolt. This happened while shooting not charging the rifle. Shot off a mag, looked down and handle was gone, thought it had just unscrewed its self. Found it on the ground and threads were not there.
Was easy to fix as I was able to just turn it into the bolt without and drilling ect. I thought this was a weak point so had ordered a replacement. I think I will order an ar15 charging handle as a backup as this would suck during a match.

beltfed, I am using pmag 10/17 mags in my gun. I had to sand the front and back at the top of the mags to get them to drop free. The funny part is they would drop free on a closed bolt, but not an open bolt. If you look you can see where the mags are dragging. It doesn't take much sanding and they will drop free.
