The rail on my MVP will not stay tight. Just wondering what grade loctite to use and what to torque the screws to? Not that i have the proper torque tool.
I just used 222 but was wondering if i should have used 242 for the extra strength.
 
Clean the holes and screw threads well and dry them off... then use blue Loctite and tighten the screws firmly, go back and make the screws a little tighter, check them once again... Let it sit for a few hours...

The rail should remain tight and yet still be removable easily.
 
Hi, do yourself a big favour and buy a proper torque tool. I went for a long time without one. It is impossible to "estimate" how much torque you are applying to a fastener. I broke a tiny scope screw head right off, of course I couldn't get the leftovers out of the screw hole. Right then I bought a torque tool. You can use it also for adjusting action screws, stock screws, whatever.

I always deploy Loctite and to settle the question of which to use, I buy a formulation specifically made for firearms. Right now I have Uncle Mike's version and they call it 'Guntite' but basically it's blue Loctite. Something that jumped out at me in one of Stephen Hunter's novels is that Bob Lee Swagger uses red Loctite, but I'm not him and it seems a silly notion, not to mention very inconvenient and possible dangerous to an optic if you want to remove something and have to get out the propane torch.


I'm finding the more exotic types of Loctite are getting hard to find anyway, a local source having dropped almost the entire line. If someone has a good source, please post it.
 
My experience agrees with Blastattack. In 50 yrs of doing scope changes I have never had one "shoot loose" and I never use any thread lock at all. The hot/cold cycles are a non-issue for me, before C68 and forced storage regs. my rifles stayed in my truck from Sept to Feb (start of BG season thru to end of coyote hunting) and endured hundreds of cold night and warm days when the truck got started and never had a scope come loose.
 
Never had a scope come loose before this one. Degreased everything well this time so hopefully no more issues.
Would like to have the proper torque driver. Kinda spendy but considdering i have wasted 70 rounds this summer chasing the bullseye. It just might be on my xmas list.

What is the standard torque to use? One set of rings i got said 50 in/lb for the base and 30 for the rings.

With clean dry threads a screw tightened good and tight will rarely turn loose on it's own. Tap the screwdriver with a small hammer as you tighten the screw... it gets to a point where you can feel it is tight... and after awhile it will be hard to unscrew...

I only mention the Blue Loctite as so many feel you need to use Loctite and Blue is at least easily removable... and some use Red which is ridiculous...

As to torquing the screws... gunsmiths got by for a 100 years without a torque wrench... now all the companies want to sell you one and give torque values for everything...
 
Respectfully disagree, I'd use loctite. (blue only). In over 45 years of using firearms I've never had a scope mount or base screw, come loose...........until...... they came loose. Only happened a couple of times, maybe 3 but at the worst time. It costs so little and doesn't take long to apply so why not use it. I've used loctite on thousands of screws in industry. It's there for a reason and I'd suggest using it on scope rings and mounts. Just my opinion.
 
This is the first ever scope to come loose on me. Dont know why!
Stuff is made cheap these days i guess. My cheap UTG rings ($45) stay tight but the Mossberg factory rail just wont stay tight!
hope the 222 does the trick if not its 242 blue next.
 
I've had base screw come loose but not sure why it's only been on my savage rifles???
Both 110's a 300wm and a 338 Lapua!

Tens years of service and suddenly all the screws backed out, fell out, and the scope fell off? Doesn't sound plausible.
