Hey Guys,

I'm looking to buy a rifle but I'm stuck...

I'm not sure if I should get a russian sks or a M14(M305)

Can anyone help me out? (pro and cons for each)

I looking for something easy to shoot and fairly accuracte and reliability.
Max shooting range we have here is about 300-400 meters.

Thanks

Surplus ammo for the SKS will be allot cheaper to shoot and give you lots of range time. But you HAVE to clean it when your done because of the corrosive primers. Just bought a 1951 Russian and I'm amazed how accurate it is at 100 yards, but it's not a 300 to 400meter rifle. Optics are hard to stay sighted in unless if you drill and tap your receiver. Shot 600 rounds so far and have never failed to fire or eject. Its half the price of the m305, so its the best bang for your buck.

GunNutz either love or hate Norcs I find. There seems to be no middle ground here. The ones that like them, really like them.....that said, I would never buy any Norc products myself. But for the new shooter on a tight budget, they are the only really cheap option. Mind you I did try the Armco tuned 1911 and the trigger pull was pretty good. The M305 I tried did not impress me at all!

How much money do you want to spend on the rifle, then on ammo? You reloading?
Forget 300-400 meters with an SKS. They aren't up to it.

What kind of range can I be expecting from the SKS?

Max 200, maybe 300 if you want to hit a man sized target. The SKS wasn't designed to be used beyond 300m. It's a great rifle (I own both an SKS and an M14), and 7.62x39 is a lot cheaper to shoot than .308, but it's not a tack driver. The M14 on the other hand, with only a few hundred dollars in tweaks and upgrades can be used out to 400m and beyond. Mind you, the upgrades alone will cost almost as much as the SKS, and ammo is $1 a round (if you're not handloading).

I'll save you and say russian sks 100%, the next gun you can save up and buy the m14 int he future.. although marstar has that great deal but if you don't have an sks, then that is your priority. I have a number of guns all calibers n sorts, still the .22lr and sks is what i use the most have the most fun with. SKS will practically NEVER jam if taken regular care like every other rifle and is more durable than 90% of all guns on the shelf. I can step on it in mud then bash it against the wall and it will pound out rounds unphased. But don't expect accuracy to be as good, at 100m you can shoot groups of 4" circles consistently and maybe better, at 200m probably a plate sized (8inches) and thats pretty much max for the sks, either way your not going to do that well with iron sites passed 200m anyways.

M14 All The Way!

I own a few rifles. Sounds like the SKS is fun to shoot (I don't own one), but, the .308 (M14) is an excellent hunting cartridge. It is perfectly legal to hunt with the M14 (5 round mags only).

Therefore it is more versatile.

For the gun itself I looking to maybe spend 300 - 400$. I'm not going to be reload ammo yet. As for the range it just what I have within a 1 hour and a half drive from where I live.

The Sks sounds like a good gun to start with.

the sks is fun but if you can find one CZ makes a bolt that shoots the same ammo and IS accurate, very accurate and a good hunting rifle with obviously the right ammo. Still a tonne of fun to shoot yet a pile more acccurate than the sks for only a few more $$

I don't know any CZ guns, do you have an example?

I've look at there web site and some local deal and there nothing under 500$

The SKS is non-resticted, holds five rounds and is a fine Deer rifle with the proper ammo! Note: commercial ammo primers are very soft compared to the military rounds and are prone to slam fire if the firing pin on the sks protrudes. Change out the firing pin if there is not spring installed.

Its the CZ858 Dizzy is refering to, same cal. as the SKS, but a $700 cost

I agree with the sks not being a beyond 2-300 yard rifle but you will laugh when you see the sight graduated out to 800 yards.

So If I want a good mid range rifle, the M14(m308) is the best choce)
But If I want something cheap Close to mid range the SKS is the way to go.
There both easy to shoot and reliability.

what M14 model to you recommend?

What Model?!?

Well, I picked up my Poly at Milarm in Edmonton for $550.00

We had a gunshow today and there were three of them (1 camo and 2 Poly's). One Poly actually had a nice tight bolt too, for $599. If you really want to toss money into the wind, you could send it my way or waste it on a Springfield M1A ($2,200 when I last checked).

So...best thing...buy a Poly, save some money. Spend $35 and take in a clinic from Hungry and then spend a few more dollars on modifications, if you wish.

Bottom line, mine pokes just under 1" groups (benchrest and my recipes) all day long. Bolt is well within NATO spec, so I am a really happy camper for about $600.

I would definitely consider the CZ858. It is light, looks cool, easy to clean, and crazy fun to shoot. Worth the extra $ 400 over the SKS in my opinion.

Sorry I sould be asking what is the Company that makes the gun? I keep hearing bad thing about Norinco firearms.

And what do you mean "Spend $35 and take in a clinic from Hungry "?

Lately Poly

Lately, most I have seen in the stores for sale have all been Poly Tech. Not to say that there are no Norinco's. My experience is only with Poly's...and the looky-see that I did with the Springfields.
