Rumour has it there will be a Black Badge certification session in Halifax/Dartmouth in February, 2011. I'd like to participate, but have limited means to practice beforehand.

I live in the back of beyond, with access only to a very simplistic public range. I'll need to make my own targets, with the exception of the existing backstop frames.

There's also not really anyone else here who is a dedicated pistol shooter and/or interested in IPSC - so Im on my own in terms of learning.

I'd appreciate any help folks could offer - especially if its personal experience in similar circumstances - to figure out a comprehensive practice plan.
There are some great resources online, that I've started to go over, such as the drills on pistol-training.cot, and these:

http://www.ipscalberta.com/blackbadge.asp

http://www.ipscbc.com/blackbadge.php

Its a good start, but being on my own, I need to work out a solid structure to operate in.

Ammunition is not an issue; I reload and cast, so I basically have an indefinite, inexpensive supply.

Advice?

The best preparation for the Blackbadge course would be just practice accuracy and insure that you can put all rounds on a 8.5 x 11 pc of paper at 25 yds.
The black badge instructors will be teaching you the best way to complete the drills required to pass the course and it is easer to learn fresh .
Just a heads up the Indoor range in Darmouth and IPSC NS does not allow cast bullets at the indoor range as the ventilation can not handle the volume of lead generated with 6 to 8 people shooting 500 rds each.
The extra cost of $15 for 500 plated is a small price to pay to preserve the health of the Black Badge Instuctor volunteers.

Hmm, news to me - thanks for the heads up. Would have made for a nasty surprise if/when I turned up with a big grin and 500 rounds of cast, just to be told to hop it.

I'll have to track down a source of plated bullets here in NS.

You should get yourself registered for that black badge course. Then you will get the training manual, rule book. It gives you a good understanding of what you will be required to do.
I was and am in the same situation as you. No IPSC here in the Yukon, so i practice on my own and make my own targets to use. When i travel south to a match i ask questions, listen to what people have to say and take that home with me.
Lot's of books and dvd's out there for us isolated folk also.

I've got my name in for it, but they arent starting registration until they know they have enough interested parties.

Good advice though, its good to know Im not alone in this.
