well i have a tikka t3 long action in a 270 win, and i want to re-bbl it to a 308 win. because i want to get into long rang shooting. not to say that the 270 win cant, there is just lack of bullet seletion for this cal.would i need to get a new bolt or would the one i have work ? forther more, what companys make cm bbl for a tikka t3 ?

thanks

and sorry if i seem out to lunch lol

Hi. A long action is too, um, long for a .308. The .270 case alone is .525" longer than a .308 case. 485 thou OAL with a 150 grain bullet. That'll give you feeding issues. It'd need a different follower and a spacer in the mag well, if there's enough room for one.
No bolt face work would be required as they have the same case head dimensions.
Converting to .30-06 would just require having a barrel fitted.

change your barrel and get a new magazine. or if you plan to shoot VLS's and seat them out far it should feed out of the straight inline T3 mag with little issues. your target won't notice the fraction of the second longer bolt cycle time on the long vs the short action. lol

Just realize that you may be better off selling yours and buying a 308. New barrel is 400+, install ~200, bluing ~100. You may have barrel channel issues in the stock if the barrel profile is different than your 270.
Or you can buy a gently used heavy barrelled Tikka - maybe one of the older Continentals or Master Sporters for a few hundred bucks less.

Have you ever even seen a T3 sunray?

They are centerfeed mags and feed the same, long or short. For a long range rifle, he is far better off with a long action mag in a T3 than a short.

Use the long action one and you won't have any problems seating your bullets out, especially if you are using heavier long-range bullets. The .308 sized mags don't give you much wiggle room.

If you are going to re-barrel anyways, why not make use of the long action room to convert to a caliber that will provide better performance at long range.
.308 ballistics are pretty mediocre at longer ranges, and unless you have a secure supply of taxpayer funded ammo, there is really not much reason for choosing that cartridge anymore.

sunray,

There have been scores of thousands of 7.62 Nato military issue, as well as thousands of 308 Win sporting rifles, produced in standard length long bolt actions.

in your guys in openion what would be a better round then? but keep in mind that im also a hunter..the other reson that i want to go with the 308, being in the military i have lots of resurces for info when it comes to the 308. that is the other reason for why i would like a 308 .. thanks again

If you like .30 cal then .30-06 would give you a few hundred more FPS, would take better advantage of the long action.

If I had a long action I'd go with 6.5x55 Swede. Been around over a century with an excellent track record. Has succesfully been used on large game and has better ballistics and milder recoil than the .308.

I would think seriously about whether to alter this rifle or simply buy something in the cartridge you want. Its one thing if the barrel is fubar, but if the barrel is good, so will the resale value. Tikka's are great out of the box and there isn't a lot of aftermarket for them. If it were me, I'd buy a Stevens, Savage or Remington and install a target barrel on it. Then trigger and stock upgrades will come much easier to come by.

took my Tikka 30-06 and rebarreled to a 6.5-06, and added a Robertson TAC stock, waiting for the Vortex PST to arrive then look out. 140 gr Berger VLD's are loaded and waiting for action. Taking full advantage of the Tikka action and magazine as the bullets seat out there nicely.

My Husqvarna .308 is the same long action length as the other calibres. The magazine box is also full length. It has steps in the sides to hold the shorter cases in place by the shoulders, but .30-06 length cartridges will fit.

If .308 rounds feed out of the Tikka's .270 magazine, this would be a plus. My understanding is that the Tikka magazines tend to limit OAL with the cartridges they were designed for. That said, you would probably be just as well to either stick with what you have or find another rifle in .308, given the cost of re-barreling. While there isn't quite the same selection of match type bullets as in .30, Berger and Sierra both make .270 match bullets.

If you plan to compete and you are just getting into the game of long range the old .308 would be your best bet. Unless of course you can get a fast twist (1:8) .223.
These 2 calibers will put you in the F(TR) class. Anything else puts you into the F Open class which really isn't the place to start.
