Long action?

Hey guys,

I'm considering stepping up from my .223... the 1:12 is limiting my bullet selection thus, making anything past 300-400 a little difficult. I have the opportunity to get a savage long action to build on... but will I get the most of it with something like 6.5x55 swede or 300 WM? or will I end up frustrated and selling it for a short action in .260 or .308?

Confirmed use of LA platform on SA chamberings. Works just fine in my experience. Also, it leaves you with the ability to swap up at a later date. I'd seriously consider the 260 REM or 260AI (better fed on LA). Wont go wrong with 308 as well. Been there and currently doing that. Good luck in your endeavors.

If your looking to push past 300-400m you certainly don't need to jump to something like a 300wm, the ballistics on short action calibers like .308 would prove more than enough. However you certainly wouldn't be disappointed in my opinion with the 300wm or something of a similar grade. That being said ammo costs heighten, and those are truly for extended ranges. If you find yourself only pushing past the 500m mark occasionally it would be unnecessary to have. On the bright side adjustments at lower ranges become minimal.

.223 is capable of 800m shoots any day.
if i were to build one from LA, id go 338 caliber or jsut stick with 308 SA. all are so fun to shoot but all depends on what and how far you want to reach.

if you have a budget in mind, than 308. 300wm, will do just fine too. just built cheap 308 with crap bedding job and still shoots @ 12" 400M target with ease and this wasnt being fine tuned with reloads. just slapped on 44.5 varget with 168 hotnady Match and seemed to shoot decent.

6.5x55mm is a nice round. I was Thinking of a similar build. It should do great for extending the range of the current .223 set-up

The 6.5X55 will work nicely. If you are mag feeding you will even have room for long bullets. Just make sure the bolt head works with the brass. SAAMI for the 6.5X55 is .480 which is bigger the the .473 on a 308 type case. plain old 260 is another great choice now that lapua makes brass for them.
