Long Branch Questions

It's a #4 Mk 1 * and there is no date on the body. I was thinking the * in the C was maybe a DCRA mark of some sort (on the top of the reciever ring), this was used for DCRA shooting with NDHQRA and may have come through DCRA???

It's almost certainly a C Broad Arrow mark.
Long Branches always have the year stamped on the left side under the words Long Branch. If it's not there something is out of whack...:runaway:

Your rifle is a 50 or 51 btw and I'm sure the 1950 is there...may be faint and hard to read under that lovely green parkerizing.
There's no year to serial number correlation, they were just made in sort of numerical sequence.

The rifle is 303 and there is definately no year stamp, I have a #7 as well without a year stamp or a serial number. Thanks Dantforth, I'll have a closer look at that tonight. It's not mine yet but I think I will have to buy it. The fact that it was used for TR often means lots of inside connections so I am not surprised if it is not exactly as it should be.

Being a target rifle, and considering the inside connections factor, it is entirely possible that the rifle was set up from parts.

We'd certainly love to see pics of this rifle Ian! Always interesting to see every variant that's out there...much easier to do in these internet days.

Is it a good deal? ;) :D

I have heard of several rifles with no serial numbers etc, there's several people on here that have such.

Long Branch

I had a new unfired Long Branch a few years agao and I let it go. It had the year but no serial number on it. There was a stamp on it that I found out later was a War Assets mark. It is a capital W with an A in the middle.
Thanks
Al

I have seen the WA mark on other goods, but haven't seen them on rifles. Cool...something new to look out for.

The C/i\ was officially dropped in 1947, although it could still be found in use until almost the mid 50s. I have to wonder if the counterstriking of the broadarrow was dropped or continued once the mark itself became meaningless.

Already posted....opposing broad arrows inside "C"

On the top of the receiver ring. Mine is a 93L ser. no. which is marked 1950. Somebody forgot to tell the guy who stamped mine that the mark went out in 1947. Dave

Didn't they replace the C arrow with the Canadian Arsenal's C with A in the middle ?

The C with the A inside was a Cdn Arsenals mark. The replacement for the C broadarrow was a stylised arrow that looked something like:
_/\_
\ . /
.\/

except with a sharper bottom point. This stamp can be found on the lower receiver (trigger housing) on Cdn FN C1A1s along with clothing, tents, etc.

I guess that answered my question as to whether they continued to counterstrike after the obsolescance of the C-broadarrow mark in Cdn service

It is actually in perfect condition under the dried out grease.

That does look like that counterstruck Broad Arrow...meaning sold out of service AFAIK.
I can't see the Long Branch and year on the left side- nothing stamped there at all? If not it really is a factory gun in one way or the other as you said.

(Ever heard that song, it was a 49, 50, 51 52 etc...)
