Long/Detailed Ruger SR1911 Review With Lots of Pictures

"I would have gone with polished flats on the slide but you can only expect so much for under $1000"
I can't stand the look of that or two-tone for that matter, and the bead blasting made the metal slightly rough.

I prefer the bluing and glass-smooth steel of the base Remington R1 1911.

looks are very personal, I have a few Walthers with that great deep high quality German bluing and it is hard to think of anything better on that gun. I fell in love with the polished flats and bead blasted rest of the gun when doing the tanfoglio stock II review, much better looking than straight blasted IMO.

work a "working" gun, stainless or hardchrome is the only way to go if you don't like seeing wear on the gun though

Dats true, but I just don't care for different reflective surfaces on the same part (of course that's excluding serrations etc.)
It was a good quality gun though.

I keep hearing guys complaining that .45ACP is so expensive to shoot compared to 9mm, I'm just wondering what you guys are paying for bulk 9mm? I'm getting 1000 rounds of 230 FMJ .45 for $340 shipped to my door after taxes.
BTW adding a rubberized grip to my SR1911 did make a huge difference.

when I bought 9mm it was $230 before taxes (picked up so no shipping), you also have to take into account I shot 12 000 rounds last year so that is a $1200 savings. Now I reload (obviously) and its $120-$130 per 1000, it would be closer to $100 per thousand but I insist on shooting the more expensive 147gr bullets.

Another difference with factory .45 and factory 9mm is the factory 9mm isnt to much worse for competition than reloaded (the stuff from custom reloading is just as good as reloaded ammo) but factory .45 is not nearly as nice to shoot as reloaded .45 with the fast powders and lower power factor.

I've never worked out the cost to reload .45 but I wouldnt do it simply because you have to brass hound and nothing ruins my day more than worrying about my brass, sure I like to get it back but with 9mm if I lose 300 cases at a match, meh who cares.

"no one uses 7 round mags anymore" obviously the writer has never heard of "Wild Bunch" matches. I have 7x 7rd Tripp magazines and the writer is correct, they are the best. I've been thinking about buying a Ruger 1911 and turning it into a dedicated .400 CorBon gun.

i just bought one of these for my major gun (have a heavily customized trojan as primary and a complete custom as my minor guns) - very dissappointed with how loose the fit is, far as i can guess, best thing this gun going for it is that it can be used for a blank slide-frame kit in stainless.

bump...I took apart my magazine release today for the first time{actually the first full strip} and I was shocked to find rust in the mag button bore and all over the spring:eek:. I don't know if Ruger left some bluing solution or something in there but rust like he11 is present.

As its not normal/necessary to remove this part and disassemble, I thought I would mention it and damn glad I caught it in time.

Guys, if you own the SR1911 check this component and oil/grease the spring and bore while you still have a spring to lube. Mine can't be the only one!?

So you bought a $700 gun and were disappointed because it didnt have the fit of your custom built, high end guns. Maybe you should have bought another $1500 1911 so you wouldnt be disappointed. Or, take the $800 you saved and shoot the darn thing.
