Long distance with a 270 WSM?

What powder are you running? I am running 59.5 grains or IMR 4350 with Hornady 140 grain BTSP. My last group was 0.608" at 100 yards. That was the drive to go long range.

Nice pics. Once I figure out how to post a pic, I will put my target up. I am waiting to see what weights the Bregers come in. I tried some 150 grain partitions first, but was not too happy with the group. I was doing some reading on the WSM and it was stating that the higher grain bullets for the WSM might not be the best due to the fact to the short neck of the cartridge. The 150's stick in there quite far and the 140's stop right at the bottom of the neck with only the boat tail sticking into the shell. I am not sure if that makes that big of a difference, but I am happy so far with the 140's.

Again, thanks.

Jim,

I believe the Bergers come in 140gr and 150gr VLD's. The 150gr B.C. is .545:D and I'm not sure about the 140's. I would not be too concerned about the length of the neck, I think what you were getting at is how far the bullet can be seated out into the chamber or "Freebore".

I to have read somewhere that the freebore on the WSM's is a little shorter than ideal. Needless to say I would still recomend going with the 150gr bullet. Just seat the bullet as far out as possible, starting 10thou from rifling or as long as your magazine will allow.

The extra amount that the 150 pushes into the case may compress the load a little but remember, heavier bullets require less powder to attain their maximum velocity anyway.
IMHO the advantages of the higher B.C. will out weigh the slightly decreased case volume.

Aslo remember that if you switch bullets do not expect your current load to perform the same. I'm not saying it won't but chances are you will have to modify your load no matter which bullet you choose.

Just another opinion.;)

Oh Ya! Partitions?

Hunting :D

Accuracy
Long Range :puke:

I have been just going through all the new unfired brass that I have, because they are kinda random... so I fire them once and now I can neck size them. if I recall I was running 64.5gr h4831 behind those 135gr SMK's
I tried imr 4350 with hornady interbonds and it made shotgun like groups

Once again, thanks for all the help. I am looking forward to playing with these bullets. I was expecting to play with different powders to see what works with them. Thank goodness my buddy already has a ton of powders to try. I was also thinking to get the best out of the bullet I will try with the 150's. I was talking with my buddy this morning who is also a 270 WSM shooter and he is thinking of trying some long range as well. It shall be fun.

Arrowhead, I sent you my e-mail address.

Thanks.

Jim

finally got something to work in my .270wsm.. I was prepping some brass today and decided to go out to the range and fire off the last 9 shells of a lot of new winchester brass so I just shot one target and it is actually showing some promise finally
