I'm looking for options for long eye relief scopes to mount on my marlin dark. I want the ghost ring to remain so I need the scope to mount forward of it ( but not necessarily in a true scout position). Std scope placement requires mounting so high chin weld is even a stretch.

I'd like a low power variable(1-8 range) with lit dot or chevron if possible as this is a quick action dark timber gun. What are your favorites?

Once upon a time I had a Ruger #1 in .416 Rigby. I wanted more eye relief than was possible with the factory quarter rib, so I had a custom quarter rib made. I mounted the scope, a 1.5-5X Leupold, so that the ocular was in line with the the front face of the falling block. Not only did this ensure I wouldn't get hit by the scope when the piece recoiled, it also created the happy situation where there was nothing encroaching upon the feed ramp and nothing to interfere with the ejection of a fired round. The limitation I found was that I could use the scope from 1-3X, but I had a shadow around the image if I attempted to use a higher magnification. This suited me since I had little difficulty hitting a 12" target out to a quarter mile at 3X, given decent light.

I don't see why something similar couldn't be done with your Marlin, provided you accept a similar limitation. A Picatinny rail offers the greatest latitude for for mounting the scope, providing its long enough. An issue that can occur with variable scope is that the long eyepiece makes mounting the scope challenging, therefor the longer the rail the better.

Thanks for your reply. My marlin dark has the factory mounted XS rail that allows for even scout mounting position. I'll need a eye relief of around 6"

Leupold freedom scout 1.5-4x have about 7 inch of eye relief.
I have this scope mount with QD warnes rings on a ruger scout.
I really like this scope.

mike,

did you ever try the ultra;ight 2.5x20 long eye relief and matching your 1 t0 3x useage.

I mounted a 2.5X Burris and a 2X Leupold both scout scopes on my .375 carbine. I liked the Leupold better, but that was probably just aesthetics, since I thought the half bell on the Burris looked dumb. But if its a new model you're talking about, no I haven't.

I have a Vx 3i 1.5 x5 and can use it on all magnifications on my #1 . Leupold also has some hand gun scopes that might work I was wondering how they would do on a #1 .

I have a 2-7x32 hilux on QDs for my Scout that I used for a couple years. It was pretty decent, but swapped to a conventional scope because I didn't like the field of view within the scope.

Although now discontinued, the Bushnell Elite 6500 1.25-8x32 pops up on the EE from time-to-time. It has 5" of eye relief, but I don't believe Bushnell made a model with their illuminated Firefly reticle:

I have one of these scopes, but I've yet to manage to find a rifle that suits it. I imagine it would fit on a Marlin with one of the extended XS scout rails.
