Long Eye Relief Scopes on K98

Hi,

This is a question for those of you who have an old milsurp rifle... say a K98 like mine... who have put a removable scope mount on your rifle....

I have found a type of scope mount that will clamp to the rear sight assembly without needing to modify the rifle... it says that you need a long eye relief scope... which is understandable... If I put this mount on my rifle... I don't know what scopes are long eye relief...

So... for those of you who have a similar set up... what scopes are you using?

I was strongly looking into this as well, a scout mount for my mauser.

There are a few things i came up with that made me think a little more before just slapping some parts together easily.

-A pistol scope is different from a scout scope. Most pistol scopes have EER which is eye relief at beyond 12 inches which is generally too much for a rifle. What was told to be OPTIMAL is a scout scope with IER...intermediate eye relief. 9inches necessary minimum starting point.
-Many of the cheaper pistol scopes you find, are set for only 50 yard parallax. I didnt think much about this until i read how your accuracy will be heavily affected if you get a scope like this for longer range shooting. However this led onto the next problem....
- Availability, finding a good 2x-4x scout scope with proper 100 yard parallax and an intermediate eye relief came to nil. nadda. Most places sold cheap pistol scopes that they CALLED scout scopes, but a REAL scout scope popped up under 3-4 choices if i can remember. The Leopold M8 Fixed power and a Burris model. Both high quality, but for these 2 top of the line scout mounts, your looking at easily 400+ dollars just for the mount + scope.

In general, best scout mount seems to be the S&K scout with weaver rail.

Now, if anyone can clarify these points to me as well, regarding pistol scopes vs scout scopes....50 yard vs 100 yard parallax and OTHER SCOUT SCOPE OPTIONS...I would also be most appreciative.

Realistically for myself i would ultimately look for a scope with these features...

2x fixed magnification(2.5x max), 100 yard parralax, 9"+ eye relief, sub 200$ price range.

Well thanks for the input so far...

If that's the case... does anyone out there have another scope mounting solution to a K98... I don't want to drill my receiver or inlet my stock?

Every once in a while you see an original mount adapter from WWII on eBay. It replaces the spring in the rear sight and replicates a ZF-41 rifle. These are WaA marked. Not sure if the assertion is true, however.

These are made in Italy. Some are Waa marked and some are not. Both are repro's for sure though.

I have an unmarked one with a ZF41 scope and mount and they will zero and hold it. The downside of this Zf41 option is that you are going to be paying $750+ for a working Zf41 and mount nowdays. The other modern scope options the other guys mentioned are the way to go if you want cheap and aren't trying to recreate a German sharpshooter rifle.

I'm not a fan of the scout scopes on the Mauser. Back when Steve1973 and myself would play Call of Duty 2 together, we'd be sniping with the short eye relief scopes...none of those scout scopes.

The Mauser is a gorgeous rifle...but it looks like an ogre with the scout scope on, in MY opinion.

Forget an LER scope setup. On a K98, the only way to go is an Iron Elite mount with a conventional rifle scope.

Does anyone have one of these? It seems to me like they'd have a hard time holding zero with all that recoil... seeing as the anchor to the receiver is very far away from the scope...

They're quite solid. Consider that cantilever scope mounts on slug shotguns are essentially the same thing (if anything they are flimsier) and 12 gauge slugs deliver more recoil than 8x57 mauser does ;)

I just ordered from S&K for my mauser....expect to have it under 10 days they said.

Plus picked up a cheapo 2.5x 30mm scout scope from them. The guy on the phone says they work just fine for their purpose and have had lots of luck with them. I figure even though its NCstar, since SK chose this brand as their only scope offering it should be of fair reliability.

Sounds great. Who is this S&K?
