Long or short action?

I have a Ruger M77 in 30-06. My stock is a bit marked up so I want to replace it with a synthetic stock. I see on many websites they show stocks for a long action, or a short action m77. Does anyone know how to determine the action length of my rifle?

30/06 is a long action along with 270, 300wm & 7mag and similar.

Yup, as these guys have said, a .30/06 requires a long action.

Long action for 30-06, short action for .308.

I replaced the canoe paddle stocks on 2 short action s/s M77's with real Ruger walnut stocks. Looking sweet! As stated 30-06 = long action.
