interested in building a 1000 yard gun. i've been pointed towards the rem 700 .308 action. anyone have any other ideas? or is this what i'm looking for? if so, where can i find one?(something over 5 years old) thanx

I don't shoot at 1000 yards, but I would look at something with a bit more velocity with the longer match bullets, say a 300 win mag or 300 WSM.

Are you posting this in Hunting because you want to hunt at long ranges (> 400m)? Or is this just posted in the wrong place?

If the former, you will need a boomer, and lots of practice to hit your target range. If you are looking for a long range paper rig, a Remington 700P is a great start. They show up on EE often

I would argue plain and simple the best gun is a RUM and I'll tell you why. Yes, there are better 1000 yard guns. 50 BMG....I don't think I have to tell you why it's not a good idea. The 30-378 is marginally better but has twice the recoil, brass is 3 bucks each and it takes a third more powder to reload than the RUM.

The RUM is flatter shooting then the WSM and if I'm not mistaken drops 5 inches less at 400 yards. You can get some tracers on here, search is your friend, do that and you need a mil-dot scope. Use the tracers and there is no debate where you hit...use them until you know where your gun is hitting at different ranges.

Any of the big 30's will do , 300 RUM, 30/378 , or the 338 Lapua, 338/378, etc.
The biggest problem for you is not the equipment but the time and effort invovled in using the gear at long range so you can kill out there with consistancy.
A top quality range finder is mandatory, and a set of swarovski big eyes are what my friends use.
Their rigs are mounted on transit tripods, and are the same 1000 yard bech rifles they use in competition.
They take deer out past 1,000 regularly.
there are some guys that shoot other stuff off bipods way out there, but they are face with the problem of being able to see as they are lower to the ground.
It works well if you are on slightly rolling prairie , however.

But , if you are looking for a competition rifle and not a bench gun or a hunting rifle a 308 will do fine, as will many of the different 6, 6.5, 7mm, and 30 cal cartridges out there......
