Long range coyote gun

I've used a 6mm rem in two guns over the years and love the results. A 22-250 rem will do it but it is hard to beat the 6mm's for down range punch and wind bucking performance.

If you want to stay with a factory gun go 22-250. Savage makes a 1-12 twist which you let you shoot a little heavier bullet to buck the wind. 243, 25-06 or 257 Wby are all good choices aswell. If you want to go custom the world is your oyster. 22-250 AI, 22-243 Middlested, 6.5-284, 25-06 AI, 257 STW. The only one of the last few that won’t eat you barrel as fast is probably the 6.5-284.

The guy I buy most of my stuff from does coyote depredation work in Sask. He currently uses three 22-243 middlesetds all in different twist rates and a 6.5-284. If you have the money and like fire forming, neck turning and all the other stuff that goes hand in hand with a wild cat you will be better off with a custom.

I wonder how many people have killed as many 'yotes as DB? Not many, I'm thinking.

For dropping yotes at 4-500 yards you need a lotta zip, with a 243 or something similar you shouldn't have any problem hitting them at that distance, but you won't killem all in one shot, unless its a head or spine shot, they are a lot tougher animal than most think. If you want to drop them with one shot I would suggest a 7mm or something that shoots a 150 grain or larger hunting bullet. Thats just from my experience shooting 94 coyotes over the past 5 years.

I've been using my 6.5x47 Lapua with 123gr sceenars with great success this year with kills in the 4-500 yrd range, seems to be laying them down pretty good with minimum pelt damage.

I found the 123 scenars did not open up much and therefor you have to be on the money and now here in Saskatchewan you want them dead so you can go get the paws.

I am now using my 6X47 Lapua with 70grBT at 3500fps.

Remington 700 sps varmint (243). The stock would need to be replaced though as it's somewhat flimzy and the barrel doesn't float.

Savage has a few models in 6 Norm BR.

I'm just throwing a model to stir up the conversation and also because I'd like to know if a Savage 10FCP-K (the new one with the AccuStock) could fill in that rôle? What are the advantages of a 1/9 rate of twist on a .223?

The faster the twist the heavier bullets you can shoot. Heavier bullets usually have a better BC and buck the wind better. They also usually hold their energy at further ranges than a light bullet with a poor BC (relatively speeking) out of the same cartridge.

Get a Savage low profile varmint in .22-250 1-9 twist Whole Sale sports had 1-2 instock last week.

Load up some 70gr VLD's over 36gr IMR 4007 SSC and a Federal match primer sould be close to 3300fps out of a 26" tube.....

I think like you Mike

 .338LAI shooting 300gr coyote pills..... Kills em dead......I gave one a beating at 925 yrds a year and half or so ago..... Spectacular.....
