Long Range facility basic requirements?

1660 with the front bumper pushing up on the fence and shot laying in the bed of a Dodge 1/2 ton with the tail gate down, and you can still see the targets no problem :)

This would be more of a challenge for the markers because at that distance a 147gr 7.62 FMJ is falling like a raindrop!

So just what is the sight correction to put a round on target at 1660yds?

i read the down load (busted up leg and can't do anything. lol) and they want you to control or own 7200 meters behind the firing line for a 50cal or 6000 meters for any other magnum thats nuts, but i went and got a lotto tickt any way

While we are dreaming, why not make it an indoor 1200 meter range with variable lighting controls to simulate all times of day, a heated concrete firing pad, and motorized retractable side walls to let the wind in if desired. I would pay a heck of a lot more for a membership at a club that will let you shoot comfortably all year long.

If you build it, they will come...

PS, I heard an internet rumour about using something more sophisticated than a shootin' chrony for tracking bullet speed. Its called... a Dopler Radar. Any chance this is actually true?

Doppler is how people like Bryan Litz get their very accurate BC #'s for their bullets.

Its a good thing one doesn't have to call it a range. :D I'm set up for 1/2 mile, and another location picked out that offers a zero to 1200 in one direction, and 700 to 1800 in another.

Ranges

I had a range setup going down a small hill to 500 yds, up hill to 1100 yds
with berms built every 100yds and gongs from 500 to 1000. Now a house is being built close by and need to find another spot to set up a new range.
When i had my outtfitting buisness i built a 100yd under ground range a place for the clients to sight in there rifles.

With a mason string streched tight spray painted along string 100' string repeat 3 times.
Dig along string i went depth of bucket
i got bunch of heavy slabs from saw mill law down over trench ,covered in 6 mill poly and put the dirt back on. L eft a slot open at end to pit pice of plywood with targets in slot to shoot at
Dig hole at end to build what ever size room you want , reloading room ,gun room, place to live the rest of your life in whatever, i went 10'x10 8' roof.
covered in dirt door and stairs coming out of ground. It worked awsome standing out side you heard a little thump.
I am moving back to country soon, my son will be out of school yea.
and i am going to build a a real nice 100 yds under ground range

I figure about 5 million dollars would do it.

Buy an effing HUGE chunk of land, there are some for sale within an hour of me that would suit the needs. They go for about 1.5-2 million or so.

Add another million or two for land clearing, and another one for the "facilities" and you end up with anywhere from a 3 to 5 million investment.

Can't see such a thing being profitable for the first 50 or so years in operation.

Steve just go out the Bella Coola hwy and pick a spot on one of those long sandy ranges, hang targets!!
There is some beautiful spots close to the Fraser river!! We drove out on one of those ranges and didn't see another person all day.

You will need to buy /own/control all the land inside the safety trace AND make sure there are no road allowances cutting across it. Otherwise you face an enormous battle with the CFO to have it approved. There is a group in Mb fighting this very battle right now with the CFO. CFO wants huge side berms the entire length of the 1000 yd range and has more or less stated that even when/if that's done they're still going to deny approval because of a road allowance (not even a road, just an allowance) some distance behind the proposed backstop. This decision from the CFO even though every inch of land inside the safety trace is owned by the guy trying to get the range approved. The CFO is essentially doing everything within it's power to prevent the range from opening.

Road allowances = public access = unmaneagable financial liability and danger according to CFO.

A gun club I formerly belonged to in Mb had to shut it's doors because of one of the landowners 2 miles downrange but still inside the safety trace objected to the existence of the range.

Just a note on road allowances. If it is an unused road allowance you need to go to the local RM and work out a long term lease on the road allowance. It can and has been done. If the road allowance is a provincial road allowance it is much harder but it can still be done.
It is very hard to make a long range shooting facility that is why there are so very few. If you are lucky enough to have one that you can use be sure to support it and do all you can to keep it because if you lose it you may never be able to replace it.
