Looking for ideas for long range shooting games say out to 500 yrds for the non comp type guys other than milk jugs at set distances. Just want to have a little fun with the boys for bragging rights. Thanks!

223rem fast twist 1/7 1/9, using 69,75 & 80gr bullets, remington, sako, tika & Savage and others offer these guns with 26" barrel, no recoil, work very well out to 1000y

Highpower or BPCR silhouette, is fired at from 200m to 500m, all off hand for highpower, and offhand at 200 for BPCR and the rest off shooting sticks! The silhouettes would be fairly easy to make with a cutting torch.

To Ben Hunchak, what size of silhouette do you use and is there a size change for the change in distance?

Don't pass up EGG SHOOTS for the boys.
Get some stakes and cut up egg carton to make "egg cups" that can be stapled onto top of stake to hold egg.Put them at distances that start easy for them and progress out.
Reactive targets are fun and to see the egg pop is always good for a laugh. Also is eco friendly!!
You be amazed at what laughs come from grown men to pop some eggs.Better than balloons.....

Graham wafers are about 2.5"X2.5" and would make a very demanding target at that range. Pop cans are also nice but clean up required.

How about some swinging gongs? You can now get various shapes or just weld up something sized to make things interesting. Instant gratification and that CLANG brings some serious smiles.

MOA sized targets are going to challenge you at that distance. Get into this and soon you will be wondering about loading tweaks, bedding, better barrels and optics.

I warn you now.... Lots of fun BUT....

One game we try is to shoot a smallish boulder. If it breaks, we try for the smaller chunks and keep breaking them up until we can't hit them anymore. you will be surprised at how small a bit you can hit.

LR golf is also fun. You can chase an old baseball or if you really have things dialed in, a golf ball. Just have a safe place for the bullets to land

There is a regulation size for those silhouettes and i think that it may be published in NRA, literature.....I've seen scaled down ones as well for closer games as well as the very small ones for .22 at up to 100m....I've also seen full size buffalo sillywets for Quigley shoots to 1500 yds. with Black Powder. I think you could get a copy off the net and keep increasing the copy size until your happy and then super impose on steel plate and torch away!!

Clay pigeons are nice to shoot at if you have a hill as a backstop. Easy to see if you hit them.

I had a competition on the weekend, I shot 24 clays, between 100-200 yards with my 22-250. 22 of them only had .224" holes to let me know I broke them, thank God for the spotter calling my hits. Stupid things just wouldn't break.

Where would this take place? I am a newbie would like learn as much as i can...Getting my Restricted in 2 weeks...I am in Calgary...I want to learn how shoot 500meters to 1000meters out...What calibre should i use and what company sells a straight shooting rifle? I am a machinist so i can check the barrel if it is really true....thanks

Checking a barrel for straightness is half the battle. It is the internal consistency that is hard to check unless you have an air guage. Ultimately, holes in paper will tell the tale.

As has been suggested many times, a Savage HB in a 223 with a 9 or 7 twist will do all you want AND let you practise without breaking the bank or eating up too many barrels. With proper bedding and good load tuning, there is little doubt that you can have a 1/2 to 3/4 min rifle at 200yds and a sub MOA rifle at 1000m IF you learn how to dope the winds.

75gr Amax or Berger, Varget or similar, CCI 450 or BR2, Win cases but Fed, Rem, Lapua, LC will do too. Just keep them from the same lot and do some basic prep to ensure consistency. Use dies that allow you to load ammo without runout and an accurate scale that will be consistent to the same tenth. These things don't cost much money but are critical to good LR success.

In time and as your experience grows, you can explore all the wonderful cartridges which are only a barrel swap away. These will all cost more to shoot and many will have much lower barrel life but the reduction of wind drift at LR will improve.

First thing is to learn how to shoot at 200yds. If you get a load dialed in and you can dope well enough to shoot 1 to 2" groups at 200yds, shooting out to a mile is only about adjusting your scope.

The basic learning skills that are necessary to shoot tight groups at short range are the same for shooting far.

If you get to where you have a fair number of 1" groups at 200yds, hitting at LR will happen very quickly cause you already know how to get it done. You just need to range, dial up your scope and hold into the wind.

Yes, it's that easy.
