Long Range Gelatin Review: Federal Premium 00 Buckshot w FliteControl.

Thanks for the great video, I'm surprised at the number of responses to these videos compared to the amount of information and quality of information provided. Thanks a bunch, Brobee!

The relative lack of feedback/interest surprises me too...but I wonder if it's maybe less a lack of interest, and more that there's some sort of shift in social media that's moving away from the forums. Tightly controlled moderation might have something to do with it too.

Cheers,

awesome test and very interesting results.

Regarding the test format...I think its a mistake to shoot more than once at the gelatin, though perhaps it is more nit-picking than anything. My assumption is that the exit holes you witnessed on the 40 yard test target could very well have been because the gelatin had been shot up already, and not necessarily because of penetration alone.

I've shot a lot of gelatin....much more than what's posted on my channel. My observations are that unless a pellet travels within about 1 or 2 pellet diamaters of an existing pellet path, their will be no increase in penetration for subsequent shots. I speculate that the reason the gelatin showed more penetration than the deer is because of the toughness and elasticity of the deer's skin. On the backside where there are no bones or stiff structures to prevent the skin from stretching, I imagine it can be quite elastic.

Thanks for the feedback!

I understand Brobee:) Based on my setup, do you agree with my prediction...thanks:)

Appreciate the feedback! My barrel's 18.5 inches with a straight cylinder bore. My criticism of the performance I witnessed at 55 yards is less related to accuracy and more related to pattern. There were pellets that impacted both to the left and right of my heart/lung aiming point....I think the pattern was slightly too open the range slightly too far.

I'd want to run a couple of boxes of shells through your gun to be sure, as my experience with the flight control stuff is that it performs best in a cylinder bored gun. In a gun with improved cylinder it's probably pretty good too, but impossible to know for sure unless you go test it at 50 yards.

I think it would likely pattern tight enough at 40 yards, but at 50 maybe not so great. I know for me I'll be choosing slugs for deer past 45 yards.

Brobee

I agree Brobee:) If I can get some to try, I`ll post my results here.

Really would have liked to see the hit amount with 1 shot at 40 yards before you shot the other 2 rounds. Also, maybe in the future setup a pattern board maybe 60 inches square to show all the pattern at 40 yards, after one shot of course. Why did you take 3 shots at 40 in your test?

Nice video and thanks for posting. Brobee have you ever thought about trying different choke tubes? I have been messing around with 4 buck and choke tubes to get an acceptable pattern for coyotes. Its an eye opener for sure once you start seeing how different choke tubes affect your patterns. Anyway thanks for the information.

loogin28, I`ve read that the Improved Cylinder choke gives the best pattern for 00 Buckshot. I`ll post my results, once I get some Federal FliteControl to shoot.

I spent quite a bit of time this fall testing exactly this….I did a bunch of pattern testing with a cylinder bore gun, an improved cylinder bore gun, a modified choke cylinder gun, and a full choke gun.

With shells using traditional wads, improved cylinder seemed to provide the best buckshot patterns, but with loads using Federal's FliteControl Wad, or Hornady's Versatite wad, plain old cylinder bore was hands down the best.

Hi Brobee,

Enjoyed the videos and subscribed. If you haven't already, I would like to suggest a test of the Score Slugs which ammosupply.ca has been offering on the forum. I'm sure it would be of interest to CNG'er and other Canadian shooters. Maybe they would donate some to the cause.

and here i had long been with the understanding that buckshot should not be used beyond 30 yards. I always thought you had to be "bow" close.

Awesome vid, subscribed!

good to see more Canadian Shooters on youtube.

You should give serious consideration to re naming your show The Joy of Firearms, you my friend sound and carry your speach just like Bob Ross :) lolol

Brobee - Your videos are superb, as is the analysis on range and patterning. Thanks for sharing this experience with us. I second the hope that you'll give the Score ammo some testing if time permits.
Cheers
