Long range hunting bullet selection

Just to back up a bit; if you liked your 180 Hot Core load and are just looking for a replacement, you could probably just get a pile of 180 Interlocks and live happily ever after. Its not like Hot-cores are bonded or anything other than ordinary.

Not that there’s much wrong ordinary, most of the time. ;)

Hot cores are bonded. They pour the bullets instead of swaging and as a result get a solder bond. Part of the appeal is they're the same price as a cup and core, but they apparently just like their military contracts and don't do a lot on the commercial market.

It's a common mistake but no, they aren’t bonded. The hot core technique lets them use a harder lead core, and not much else.Section a few with a hacksaw if you don't believe a random guy on the internet. ;) or ask Speer.

“no, bonding requires flux, we do not flux the Hot-Cor bullets, the
Trophy Bonded Bear Claws are bonded. The Hot-Cor has the substrate
material put into the jacket in a molten state, which stops oxidation of
both jacket material and substrate material.
Shoot Straight!

Ha. Just cut one apart with some cable shears and ya. Not bonded. Always heard they were and was under that impression because they generally perform quite well and didn't ever question it. That said, jacket is pushing 1/16" at the base so they're quite a robust bullet.

Thanks for sharing that.

For what it’s worth I’ve had excellent results with the 178gr ELDX out to 300yds and as close as 60. The few bullets I’ve recovered looked good enough to give me confidence in going longer with them.
