Untill now I have been very content using bullets like Nosler Accubond , and Seirra Boattails. My question is at longer ranges, say 500m + , would a bullet like the Seirra 190 gr. BTHP provide better expansion on deer sized game out of my 300 win. mag ? Has anyone out there used the Seirra Boattail Hollow Points for Hunting ?

Sierra doesnt reccomend using MatchKings for any hunting, although some guys do anyways. Expansion is hit/miss at any impact velocity.

A 180 grain boat tail (Accubond, GameKing, Ballistic Tip, SST), when launched @ 3100 f/s, dont drop below 1700 f/s until around 900 yards. All of these bullets should expand at that low of a velocity, especially the NBT & SGK

Actually, 500 metres is not true "long range" in a technical, ballistic sense for a cartridge like a .300 Winchester Magnum, though it is "extreme range" in a hunting sense.

For that kind of shooting, I'd bet that the Accubond or the Interbond would be the ultimate bullets to beat. That plastic tip is designed to initiate expansion even when velocity drops down low. As todbartel suggested, with those bullets, I'd expect expansion even at 1,000 yards out of a .300 Winchester Magnum.

If truth be known, I'd expect even a Barnes Tripleshock to expand at 500 metres on deer-sized game if driven at .300 Winchester Magnum velocities. This would be especially true if you stepped down in weight to something like a 168 Triple Shock and launched it at 3,150+ f.p.s.

As always, the real limitation is the ability to hit an animal reliably at 500 metres in a hunting situation. But I'm certain that you are well aware of that issue, so I won't belabor the point.

Shot a coyote with a 308- 168gr SMK @ 100yds.

The coyote dropped dead, but judging from the exit hole, I'd say it went through like a laser beam. And here's the trick.... even with non-expanding bullets, the shock alone would kill an animal, depending of course on the size, caliber, energy, distance etc. At longet distances, where the bullet looses a lot of energy, the only thing that may help is that gyroscopic stabilization isn't that great either and it will tumble shortly after entering.

Did you take a look at other brands? Hornady, Lost River, Berger, or anything with a J4 on it?

A buddy of mine uses the Hornady A-MAX bullets for long range hunting. He has dropped Moose beyond 1,000yds with them. That plastic tip might have a lot to do with it and they are accurate for long range. Of course his guns are specialized and shot off a bench at those ranges. I think he used a .30/338 Lapua to get the needed velocity at those extreme ranges.

So the .300 Win Mag should work well with the A-Max to a certain range.

I know it's a tough call. Some bullets great for long range acurracy don't provide reliable expansion. Those great for close to medium hunting also fail to expand at long range. I found the old Barnes X didn't expand reliably at long range.

Sierra does make a hollowpoint for hunting................

I cut a 165gr Sierra hollow point hunting bullet. Besides the clove leaf shaped meplat, there was no difference in jacket thickness or anything else when compared to a SMK.
