Gate, I would have bet money you would have said .375 Ruger....are you feeling faint.....memory a wee bit fuzzy.

That is what you get from too much recoil !:)

With the right bullet, the 375 Ruger has a similar trajectory as a 30-06, which isn't a bad place to be. I don't have any problems banging the gong at about 340 yards at our range with the 375 Ruger. Maybe I'll stick a Stoney point turret on the scope and see what I can do out to 450...:)

I purchased a 30-378 just for this purpose, I hunt Elk in Hinton Alberta and can never get close enough because of the hunting pressure put on these animals after bow season, It is not an economical firearm, but I love it and will enjoy using it this Elk season. Besides that I think any Mag or Ultra mag will do what you need with a good choice of optics.
 
Id like to say thanks to the fellows that had actual advice to the question I posed. To the ethics debate team GO START YOUR OWN THREAD!!!

Had some help from our famed CGN member Rembo and he sold me a Beautiful Model 70 crf 300 wsm :D I ordered my new rangefinder, new binos and got a decent spotting scope from last year.
Planning on researching some loads and shooting rocks at various distances up to 500 yards, I will not shoot any farther then that. Ive got some H4350, RL 19, H380 and some 165 and 180 gr. Accubonds to try out.
I'll probably end up shooting my deer at 75 yards like I do most years but hey I gotta learn something new and the 300 wsm looks like a real winner. If anything comes out of this its fun just to buy a new rifle :dancingbanana:

Scott, it does not matter if you throw bricks at them, what matters is that you enjoy the hunting...and if someone wishes to discuss ethics, why not....it livens up the discourse.

And if you are really lucky you may be able to con someone into an argument...even more entertainment !
 
Quick lesson- FInd the BC of the bullet you are using, find the velocity. Do a quick ballistic program check

Range your target, adjust scope accordingly

Adjust and make your own drop chart
 
this is a toss up so flip a coin for the 30-06, 7mm, and 300 win magnums go a little quicker but dead is dead

if you dont want to toss a coin go 338 or larger.

And i'm not gonna preach ethics either!

SO, It's been two season's since this thread stopped and........

Tell us how your LR hunting went etc. Kinda curious.

I grew up hunting the flat fields of Manitoba and had most of the mature bucks run before I ever got within rifle range. Alot of the time they would bolt even if they were 400+ yards out. It had to be full rut before one could hope to shoot at them within 200yds.

Years later, after moving to Alberta I bought a few big LR rifles, 264 win, 7mm STW & 30-378. Practiced to sub MOA out to 500yds with each of them. Unfortunately, the terrain is different here in NorthEast Alberta and I have not taken a deer over 350 yds, but I have ruined a few @ 100yds. Any 28 or 30 cal is pretty distructive to meat over 3000FPS.

One day I'm going to go back to MB and hunt just to see if those cannons actually work well @ the perscribed ranges.

Friend just picked up a browning xbolt - 270 wsm & topped it with a leupold canadian, wow have to admit pretty stunning balistics . It certainly will take alot of guess work out with a decent range finder in your pocket.
 
300 ultra very accurate cartridge and very versatile if you re-load I use it in a Rem sendero with a 6500 bushnell . A good range finder and a ballistic program are also needed . Guessing range and hold over = wounded animals . The longest range I have ever shot a Mule deer with this set up was 468 YRDS . to shoot a deer at 500 takes time to range the animal get into position dial up the scope but can be done cleanly.

If you want to go cheaper rifle/ammo with some punch I suggest the 7.62X54R Mosin Nagants with a scope on it. It's ballistically equivalent to the 30-06 in many ways, and often can be found with heavier bullet weights. My two coppers.
 
Honestly, aren't both shooting and stalking good hunting skills to develop? If you only get one opportunity to take an animal all season, but it's just outside your comfortable range (EDIT: with no possibility of stalking closer), wouldn't you wish you'd improved your shooting skills?

x2 and your goal is obviously to hit 'em in one, drop 'em in one where they stood. Id go with .300 mag, it stays deadly longer than an .06 and can handle larger bullets for even longer range. If cost is a real issue than you'd be fine with a 30-06 and good optics in probably a tikka. But if its not, go with .300 mag, and Nightforce builds a scope specific to the round. hi scott :)
