Since spending time on the range with Catthehat........and it realy pains me to say this,;) :redface: I have developed an interest in the Long Range with Iron sights game. Just wondering what you guys are using, the ranges you are shooting, the types of sights you peer through and any other Ideas. I have an M-14 that is impressing the hell out of me right now, and considdering a Lee-Enfield #4 with Parker Hale sights in .308. I see Cat shooting with more and more scopes and raz the heck out of him everytime he post a pic of a rifle with a scope, so I just figured I should try his game.
 
A 305 may not be the best for very long range - there can be a problem keeping bullets supersonic. A No.4/.308 - or - .303 for that matter, will work at long range, but there are better choices. With issue ball, a long barreled No. 4/.308 was competitive to 1000. Once real match ammunition was available, they faded pretty fast. Using one now would be fine for recreational shooting, but as I said, there are better choices.
 
I suppose it depends what you consider 'long range.'

You might want to look into palma shooting. That's 308's with open sights at 600yds and 150 grain bullets
 
Go irons go, great fun, and makes one a better shot. Now that is if you don't have to hold a paper at a meter away to see whats written. Some of us old farts have the fuzzy sight picture up close, and have gone to peep sights and scopes:( which I guess peeps qualify, but even then I find myself wondering why that darn peep is not round under poor light.:rolleyes:

Yeah, I wish I could shoot with opens. My contact lenses don't tend to work so well with them though :(

Still, nothing could be as gratifying as misting a 250 yard gopher that the guy next to you can't even see.

Palma is .308 at 800,900 and 1000 yards or 700,800 and 900 meters. They are not open sights, but are called iron sights. Peepsight (iris) in the rear and usually a round insert or iris up front.

LRC, there are plenty is rear sights and front sights out there, depends on how much you want to spend. A Warner, Centra or RPA rear sight, along with a front sight and iris' for both will set you back about the price of a good scope:eek: Or look for a used Centrail or AJ Parker that isn't too warn out.
 
Long range is as far as I can go, accurately. With Iron's It will probably be around the 500yrd mark right now but hope to cross the 1000 by the end of summer. Looking for a good rifle sight combination. I know the Lee Enfield well and am very comfortable shooting it. I was wondering more about rifles like the Sportco, Older Henry rifles, Sharpes, etc.
 
I fire FNc1's and M1A's on the old 600 yard range in Chilliwack. The M1A shot alot better than the FN's, for me anyway, at 600 yards.I worked with a guy that use to shoot 1000 yard matches with a 45/70 and iron sites but he retire years ago .

The Lee Enfield in question was one of the factory hammer forged barreld rifles, with a set of Parker hale irons.
They are a fine rifle, and this one was a good deal, which is why it is already GONZO!!
The Black Man honed the other day, about 4 days after I told him to, and was too late!

Like Maynard says, Palma is fired to the back of the yard with 155 grain bullets, and a whole bunch of YAHOO!

LRC, If you are going to shoot Target Rifle with a Jacket and sling, you might as will make a fashion statement with the jacket. You can get a custom jacket made with some wild colours. I saw a bright pink one at the DCRA one year.

OK so we are back to the .223 vs .308 thing....:) I'm going to give you two your dig!!! I still hold to the .308 outshines the .223 and I love them both;) Pink Jacket???? you guy's should talk to Alberta Tactical your minds are on the same fashion.;) :D I don't think I will spend much time if any competeing, other than something local like a shooting competition with cat and others to see who gets to wear the pink jacket;) :) I'm a little sorry I missed on the enfield cat had lined up, looking for rifle, sight, and caliber suggestions here.....recoil not a major factor:p :)

That's borderline blasphemy from a Canadian. I am begining to love the M-14, but I don't think it will ever overtake my love for the FN-C1, accuracy havent got enough range time with the M-14 to compare and since I can no longer own or shoot a C1 I will have to pretend it's as good;) :)
 
If you want a good iron sighted .308 target rifle, look for a decent used one. RPA/Millenium/Barnard actionned rifles are becoming the standard. The ones being replaced come up for sale, often with sights. Only catch to a Sporto is the barrel situation. Unless these have an adapter, they can only use Sportco barrels.
 
I didn't say a guy was wearing the pink shooting jacket. It was a nice lady from Texas, Y'all. But if that is what you are into, who am I to judge:p
 
I have only held a Tikka 595 Master Sporter once. Seemed very nice and was much lighter then I expected. Price at the time was reasonable. The stock is ISU style more for 3P. Barrel was short compared to my 30 inch barrels. For a stock target rifle I would give it a 10 just for appearence, fit and finnish.

Maybe someone who has one can tell you more about the top of the receiver in regards to sight mounting. I am not sure if it has the European 14mm dovetail or 11mm.
For a nice rifle like that you don't want to puy on a cheap AJ Parker. It would be like putting hub caps on a Ferrari.
Look for GC Centra, Warner or an RPA. For front sights, Tiger, Tomkins, RPA, Anshutz. Go with a basic iris in the rear sight and an iris and eagle eye up front (saves changing inserts all the time)

LRC, line up with us this spring, I have a few DCRA rifles that you can try as well as a 303 LE with PH receiver sight.(or I could swing the PH #5 over to the 308 LE) If I can figure how to Crazy Glue them on, you could try irons on my Master sporter or my Kongsberg. Gots a great 6.5X53 Finn biathlon rifle that will go 500 easy.

The point is, thereare lots out there, you just gotta have the nerve to jump on them as soon as they are listed. I am going to switch my BSA Featherweight Majestic over to a peep and that should be a different type of ir5on sighted fun, it will easily do under 1" at a hundred with the flip up leaf sight, should be able to cut that in half with a sight that adjust without a hammer!

I like the FNC1 alot but for me the m14 has better site base and the stock is more conducive to shooting for me. I don't like pistol grip stocks and I feel the split sight base isn't as accurate on the FN.Its my opinion only.

No Cat....don't get your hopes up, and take what I say out of context.;) What I am saying is I can beat you!! not only at my game but at your game with your rules!! and worst of all....YOUR RIFLE!!!!:p :p :p :p :p ;) :D

As I said I like all types of shooting, The more I try the more I know what I like, we only hit this earth once so might as well try as much as possible.

Old badger....I think I did try your tikka out, that is the one you had at the range with the IOR scope on it if I remember right??? If so that is the rifle that gave me the idea of the tikka with Irons though, I loved the way it felt and ballanced, In .308 wasn't it?

Thanks for the sight suggestions Maynard think I'm going to persue this idea further, Heading to the Calgary gun show may find a good deal.
