Long Range Reticles

Thanks Jerry, I am looking for a top tier scope. I like the idea of buy once cry once.. I was set on a S&B for the longest time but I'm not a huge fan of the PLF,, I think I prefer the .2 mil wind markings on the Kahles skmr. Now I'm thinking K624I SKMR/3 vs Nightforce ATACR f1 Mil-C, both hove .2 reticles. K624I has less elevation range (will only be an issue if I move this scope onto a true ELR rig, but I may not have the money for a new scope in the future) but I worry about Nightforce's Mechanicaly calibrated clicks and ruggedness compared to the Kahles.

Well, you are going to have alot of fun balancing specs and needs. Once you get over $2500, there are lots of goodness to choose from. All have their quirks and positives.

If money is no object, the Tangent Theta makes for a very nice premium option. Having looked a very very long ways with these, I can say with confidence, seeing is not going to be one of your issues with this scope.

From a cost perspective, I would start at the Sightron SIII 6-24X50 SFPs... 100 mins of useable up BUT if you want mils, the options aren't as wide. The FFP Mil 6-24 offers a simplified hash mark reticle which will do what you want. We have had no issues seeing and dialing to max travel. Been under a range of boomers over the years.

Sightrons top tier scope is the SV family. Been using them for a couple of years in competition and they are fantastic scopes. Wonderful side focus system, great glass, one of the most travel in a high mag scope and tracking has been bang on. If you want a 10-50 mag range, there is a mil/mil option. There will be a new ED lower mag Mil version coming out in 2018

I just tested the Athlon Cronus and am really impressed. Glass is really really good and has lot of the FFP features shooters are asking for. 34 Mils of up. Not sure if there is anything in its price range with the features and options???

If you can, get behind as many of these scopes as you can. Some will find the Xmas tree reticle really irritating... others love them and wonder how they ever did without.

Glass styles and quality are perceived differently by shooters. Not a right or wrong thing, but a "I like this more then that" thing.

Some of these scopes are really heavy.. not sure if that matters?

Some have low eye relief or critical eye boxes... why it is important to test if possible. The products listed by others are all really good and certainly have their fans and market presence.

What is THE scope for you.... hopefully, you will be able to test some and decide for yourself.

I wish Tangent Theta would get their heads out of their asses and bring out some more reticle options. The current options really leave a lot to be desired.

I completely agree. They are asking big money but their owners seem very happy. The quality of the scopes seem outstanding but the advertised reticles left me underwhelmed.

Op. Nightforce makes some of the toughest optics in the world especially the atacr or beast lineup, you will not have to worry about its performance. I have been delighted with my pmII. I cannot recommend them enough.

PRS now has a mini ELR series within the series:
https://www.precisionrifleseries.com/matches/match/915/
https://www.precisionrifleseries.com/matches/match/898/
https://www.precisionrifleseries.com/matches/match/886/

Real field matches with limited shots (2-3ish) at each target, not the send 40 to land 1 type of BS. Last years was won with a +75% hit ratio.

You know what scopes people use in these? Same ones they use in the regular series... Same Kahles, Vortex, NF, S&B, etc... FFP scopes with the same reticle.

These are not really true ELR matches. Most shots are still within 1,200 yards. For the PRS "ELR" matches, the short/medium action cartridges such as the 6.5 SAUM rule. People have found out that the bigger ELR calibers (.30's+) are really overkill for those matches. So absolutely the exact same scopes will work. These are not really ELR matches though.

For true ELR matches, where the starting target is 1,500+ yards and they go out from there, you want to be able to hold LOTS of elevation and windage. Reticles such as the Horus series, Tremor series, AMR, etc. are what is needed. On top of that, you will want an adjustable base or rings, or a prism setup such as the Charlie Tarac. Typical PRS reticles such as the SKMR series, EBR-2C, H2CMR are not going to be the best choices.

They are practical ELR matches. Yeah, you can go out further and fire dozens of shots at something and eventually hit it, but what's the point?

Most of the guys trying to contact targets at silly distances are using SFP scopes with really fine reticles. The Horus stuff is on the thick side even for regular distances and really isn't suited for that.

For ranges over 1500m, this is what I use in an NXS 8-32x56:

The small dot works well for ELR targets less than 18". The lower dot reference is for holds at extreme distances where the lack of internal elevation adjustment occurs.

How the heck do you hold wind accurately with that though ?

Looking for a top tier scope, just get a nightforce with cross hair and dot and dial your scope, 85% +F class shooters use Nightforce because they work and track perfectly
