Long Range Rifle Part 2

Buy this in 6.5x55, pick up a couple hundred Lapua brass, 139gr Lapua Scenars and head to the range.

Simple, easy, and it will likely shoot better than you can as far away as you want to shoot anything.

We are on the same page here, + getting it flutted & bedded to finish it off. If a real hard charger, I would get one of those new Robertson comp tact stock for it.

Let me clarify. I did NOT mean to suggest that you could fire one cartridge (.260 or 6.5x55) in a chamber cut for the other cartridge.

That would be beyond stupid because the headspace is different for each cartridge, among other things.

The point I was trying to make is that if you have an action that was originally made for one cartridge and decide to re-barrel it to the other, you can't do it reliably unless you use a slightly sloppy action like a 98 Mauser.

I repeat: you CANNOT fire one cartridge in a rifle chambered for the other cartridge!

I was at a gun show (Orangeville) and saw a CIL (Savage) single shot target rifle there in 308 for $600.

Solid action and stock. I have one barrels in 260 Rem Improved. This gives me same case capacity as a 6.5 x 55. This rifle used to be a 6.5 x 55, but I shot the barrel out.

I opted for the 260 Improved because the bolt face is the same as 308 and I had a lot of 308 Winchester brass i could use.

Recoil of these two calibers is the same. I would say it is about the same or maybe slightly less than a 308.

Both calibers got me about 2,950 fps with a Sierra 142. A pure 260 would be 150 fps less. I use H1000 and RL22 (too the brim).

JEEPERS!!
Did it come with sights?
The 950t's I've seen generally run about $50-$500!
I maybe just sold mine a tad cheap!!

NOPE !

Don't worry - the price is probably high and climbing because he's been dragging that thing around to all the gun shows without selling it!!!...lol

It's crazy in S. Ont. - another point of confusion?!?!?!? - I've seen Remington jam-o-matics (7400's) USED for $650 - Ahhhhh!!!!!!!! :runaway:

...and $350 for a standard 10/22 - no sights - come on.....

Sorry to jack this thread - had to let you know....

How's your decision on the 260 vs. 6.5x55 ?

Another reason I have previously suggested the 260 is the widespread availability of good 308 brass - it's easy to neck-down to 260 - FWIW - and noted earlier.

There are some great suggestions here!!! Action selection and magazine lengths are an important consideration - something I hadn't considered yet myself. This thread is very useful with great info!

Best luck! - SD
