Long Range Rifle (Remington 700)??

Hi,

I wanted to get a very good long range target shooting rifle. I don't have one (currently only have a .22). I was originally interested in the Mossberg MVP-LC Bolt-Action Rifle (.308), but read several reviews where there were issues with misfires. I read a bit and people seem to really like the Remington 700. I wanted something than can be used from at least 1000 yds - 2000 yds. I don't know much about these larger calibre rifles.

I would like to only buy once and be happy. I was thinking of about $5000. Is the Remington 700 going to be a good target rifle or can I do better??

That's a whopper of a first post but welcome to being a gun nut.

First off, you ain't doing 2000 yards with a .308. You're more likely looking at a .300wm or 6.5cm.

Secondly, 5 grand (assuming just rifle since no mention of scope) will not only get you a Remington 700, you can completely rebuild the thing from the ground up.Which will give you a great rifle, but for that kinda money I'd be looking at something custom build on a 700 foot-print action.

Third, getting the impression you're new to long range ? If so, we'd all like to buy once but its not the reality in the long range game so I'd recommend letting go of that idea.

Look for a used Remington 700-5R Gen.1 milspec in .308. Swap out the trigger for something like a Trigger Tech Special, get a good 20moa scope rail & rings (ATRS might be a good choice) and get a decent mid-price range scope that mil/mi, maybe a Vortex Gen.2

Put in a lot of trigger time, learn the fundamentals and start working your way out distance wise.

Build on the 700 as you grow and have fun doing it.

And oh yeah, forget about the Mossberg.

The 700 is a great action to build off, loads of stock/chasis options, barrel manufactures, bottom metals, scope mounts etc...
If I was doing it all over again, my next build would be a 700, 20" barreled action, 6.5 Creedmoor, I'd put a timey 510 trigger on it, set it in a MDT LSS gen 2 chasis, and top it off with a Vortex Razor,
Lots of 6.5 creedmoor ammo to choose from if you dont reload,
 
If you have $5000 to spend I would call Insite Arms and talk to Harley about what you want to do with the rifle and let him build you an awesome rifle that you can grow into.

Harley is great to talk to and loves to shoot. He builds absolute lasers
 
Thanks for the quick replies. I should have mentioned - that although I only have a .22 - I am ex-military and have had exposure to a lot of different weapons throughout my 35 yrs (never got to fire a .50...sigh :( ). The idea of customizing a Remington 700 has appeal as I saw one that looked pretty "cool" from JMS Tactical (see photo). I will check out Insite Arms as suggested and see what they have. Heres a couple of photos that appealed.

If your working with a $5000 budget I would advise against using a Remington 700 action

If you like that JMS Tactical chassis, take a look at Accuracy International, Cadex, J Allen, Masterpiece Arms, KRG to give you some ideas. Insite Arms has lots of chassis in stock. If you are close to them I would see if you could handle a few options and see what fits you best. I don't like the feel of a chassis I like a stock but some people love the feel and how modular a chassis is.
 
With a 5k budget don't even look at an off the shelf rifle. If you need to include a scope at that price then you are back to factory but high end rifles.

Look at some custom actions and see what you like. Defiance, Mausingfield, and Surgeon are a few of my favorites but there are many more. You will need a trigger and i love Trigger Techs over all others.

Then look at barrels, Bartlein, Kreiger, and Leijia are a couple i have experience with. But again thier are many more, Bob Jury make amazing barrels and my next one will be from him.
There are a bunch of stocks and chassis to pick from like McMillan, Manners, JAllen, and MDT.

Complete rifles in that price range with premium components can be bought from Cadex. They have thier own action, trigger, and chassis. The barrel is a Bartlein.

Caliber is super important, if you need over 1000 you need to go to 6.5 and for over 1500ish you should really look into .338.

Closest rifle is my buddies .338 Lapua, next is my .338Lapua AI and last is a .308. We could put rounds on a 20 inch target with some work at 1890 yards but .308 dropped out at 700 due to shooter and scope limitations.

I suggest something a little cheaper to shoot like a .260 rem, 6.5Lapua (6.5 creedmoor), or 6.5x284. You can get these calibers to shoot very far without too much cost on ammo.

I have over 1000 bucks just into the 338 dies, brass, powder, and bullets. Nevermind bipod, scope, range finder and other accessories.

I suggest what others have and talk to Insite Arms they are great.

There's 2 Prairie Gun Works Timberwolves in 338 Lapua in the EE right now for around 5000$.
Problem solved.
Where are you finding 1000 to 2000 yards to shoot?
 
Ah, well that's different then.

As others have suggested, call Insite. You'll get an awesome rifle.

I agree with Aprilia Man. Don't cheap out on the glass. I had a 4-16 vortex and it sucked compared to a 4-14 nightforce.
I like the latest generation of Vortex scopes they are much better than the old ones and i would add them to the list.
 
Another vote for Insite. Harley and Andy are top notch and will steer you into something that works for your intended purposes.

As an aside, if you're new to long range, I'd suggest something in a short action caliber, like a 6 or 6.5 Creedmoor. With the right bullet you can push those out to 1500 and they'll hammer inside 1200. A caliber that is capable at 2000 yards is going to be much more expensive per trigger pull so unless you have a spot where you will be regularly shooting that far, I'd suggest starting with something smaller and working up to a boomer.
 
For me, my next build, will be build on a long action receiver. The extra little bit of length and weight won’t hurt anything for the shooting but it means I can co any direction from 6.5CM to the 300WM and better with a barrel and maybe a bolt face.
Might just be something else to think about.
 
Do you reload? Before the fellow nutters help you spend your cash on just a rifle, stop and consider all the other things you'll need. Others have mentioned Optics/mounts. What about reloading? If your not already you really should be. Take about 1k of that $5000 and earmark that for reloading equipment (unless of course you have that in your budget already). A custom rifle may be great, but the right ammo is the icing on the cake...a mediocre cake can be great with the great icing. Factory ammo just may not give you the results you're looking for.
