I currently have: -CZ American 17 HMR (legend 5-15)
-Browning BLR Laminate/Stainless 22-250 (3200 5-15x50)
-7MM Ruger MkII (Bushnell 3200 3-9x40)

I want to build a long range rifle that is capable of shooting at long distances (but not necessarily for big game). I have picked out a scope (Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x Zoom) and am wondering two things:

Is the 25-06 a good cartidge to pick?

What cartridge would you pick given the guns i already own?

I want a rifle that is stainless/laminate or synthetic and i have been looking at Ruger, Browning, Tikka, Sako(new A7), and Remington 700.

Thanks!

id say for a nice stainless dedicated LR rifle look at something like the Remington 700 Sendero but they only make them in Mags and Ultra Mags now and theyre on the expensive end of the scale.

for sheer value its hard to beat the $1000 Savage FT/R Target Rifle. its both stainless/laminated, comes with the new Savage target action and 6oz Target Accutrigger, but ive only seen it in .308.

the only drawback i see to that rifle is the whopping 30" barrel, its a bit heavy/awkward to lug around so it would only be suitable for something like a beanfield rifle, benchrest rifle or for varminting.

the Savage target action is $500 on its own.

you should really be asking this in the Precision Rifles forum though... you ask here and 3/4 of your answers will be 'get a T3'..

Ya only thing that should really be shot at long range is coyotes and prairie dogs maybe thats about it and the people in the precision rifles forum would know better.

pitpenz83,

here is a long range rig i recently put together, and which performed very well.
Savage model 10 FCP .308 (mcmillan stock) $1099.00
Bushnell Tactical 6-24x50mm(side parallax,mildot,30mm tube) $680.00
Nightforce 2pc bases and 30mm/15moa rings $ 260.00
a Harris bi-pod and sling of your choice $180.00

the rifle has a 1/10" rate of twist and has shot 168gr through 190gr Sierra Matchkings very well, right out to 800yds.

good luck and good shooting,

i.
