what are you guys shooting for long range precision (1000 plus yards)?
what cal and why you picked it over the next one?
i am building a long range rifle, and have a bullet in my mind, but i am interested in your expirences! gunsmiths i would like your opinion as well!

I am in the process of building a 6.5-08 for my long range shooting. I hummed and hawed over the 6.5x55 as well but decided to go with the 6.5-08 (aka 260 Rem).
 
It doent have a lot of smashing power but I shoot a 6mm Remington with a 90gr serria backed by some 4064 ( powder doesnt like temp changes ) at 2772 avg. of ten rounds and it gets out there and rings the steal at 1025. The best I have shot with three rounds at that distance is 5 1/2 inch. If I could do that agian I dont know, could have been a fluke. It does hit there every time on a 14' x 21' steel plate. Gotta love Exbal.
 
My rifles for long range follow the DCRA/ICFRA rules. .308 Win with a max 156 gr bullet weight. Works for me out to 1000 yards.
 
I have been running my 7mm STW with 180 bergers over retumbo. this gets me just over 3100fps.

and this weekend i am starting load development on a 6mm-284. i will be running 115 bergers and expect them to run around 3100 or so.

the 7mm hits pretty hard. it is cratering half way through mild 5/8 steel at 700 m
 
What's the bullet you have in mind ajax? I think the best bullet out there is the Berger 180gr vld. Currently I'm shooting A 210 gr Berger out of my 300 WSM @2900fps (WIN780). This set up is great but two things I don't like about it.

First the recoil. My gun weighs 16.5 pounds, so recoil is mild on the pain scale, but controlling it accurately is a difficult task.

Second, the 210 grs bullets and 68gr(+/-) powder per round and norma brass @$170/100gets costly. To be a consistently good 1000yd+ shooter takes lots of practice.

I used to shoot 6.5-284 but found it wore out barrels too fast.

My next Barrel will be a .284 Shehane which is a has a slightly larger body than the standard .284 and allows an extra 3.5 grains of powder. This decision may also change if the availablilty of Reloder 17 in Canada does not change. Apparently with 55-ish grains Reloader 17 and a 30-32" tube people are clocking +3000fps with a 180 gr Berger VLD. IMO nothing will touch that B.C./fps combo unless using the 7mmWSM/RUM at the cost of 20%+ more powder and reduced barrel life. Also a Very fast 6mm with 115gr VLD's may beat it , but once again I hate changing barrels often.

My decisions for 1000yd and (+) shooting will now start with the best B.C. bullet with a targeted speed that shows LR performance with reasonable barrel life and recoil. Then comes availability of quality brass and other components (I have to find out the availability of .284 Shehane dies, apparently Redding makes them on a limited basis for Bill, and his store may carry them). I also don't like fiddling with brass too much. I prefer to just chamber a factory brass and fire form.

Anyhow my 2 cents.
 
I have been shooting a 260AI with the 139 Lapua quite successfully. Another combination is the 6mm Remington with the 105 Berger VLD. Both these rifles have 1-8" twists, the 6.5 is a Krieger, the 6mm a Gaillard. I have also shot the 6.5x55AI in sporter class 1000 yards, This is a great chambering, giving up very little to the 6.5-284, but with better barrel life expectancy. Regards, Eagleye.
 
diesel weasel, the bullet i had planned is the 7mmwsm! before that i had the 300 win mag planned, but i think the 7 will be better with high b.c bullets.
i am not interested in the 338 lapua because of its high cost to shoot factor, although i dont think it can be beat with its balistics.

i think the 7mm wsm is a great round, I personally like the 7mm rem just because it does the same thing for cheaper and more available. I wish I hadnt sold mine:(. If you thought the Lapua looked good but dont want the brice of brass, look at a .338 Rum shooting 300SMK's. I just got one, cant wait to try it!!!
 
With the leaning towards 7 mm bullets for long range, the .284 cartridge and such, why isn't the standard .280 Rem. or even better the .280 Ackley more popular?
 
I'm running a 300 Winchester but my rifle was built as a LR Hunting rig and I decided that I wanted to run 30 caliber. The 7 Remington is a great choice too. The Old Man has one that shoots wee-bitty groups and is a dream to shoot at LR. I fall you were after is paper then I would build a 6.5 of some description. But for game I think the 300 WM or one of the big 338s would be a better choice.
