long range scope tug of war

Having an 8.5x-25x scope must be nice... except it brings me back to the issue with the rifle stock. If you mount a scope with a 50mm objective on your rifle, than you will need higher rings? I am concerned that mounting the scope so high on my Tikka T3 Varmint this high may mean that i can't get a proper sight picture, or am I way off on this? Unfortunately I'm still waiting for my PAL, so don't have a rifle to experiment with. I was trying to find a scope in this power with a 40mm objective that is also durable, but no luck.
It seems that all higher power scopes have 50mm or larger objectives.

Another option would be to get the proper cheek piece to customize the fit of your rifle so it wouldn't matter what hight rings you have. The rooster 33 comes to mind. Or you can buy a lace up version. You may even luck out with medium rings for a 50mm bell. I did. My Leupold 6.5-20 X 50 fits in Leupold medium rings with just enough clearance for the butler creek flip ups. Still no contact with the barrel either.

Got some good advice regarding the Leupold Tactical series 6.5x-20x with the 50mm objective, it's the scope i'm going to go with. Will have to make a phone call to find out some more info about the cheekrest on my rifle stock though. Hopefully the scope can still be mounted somewhat close to the bore, if so I'll be quite happy.

Cheek weld might not be all that is cracked up to be.

I used to have everything set up for a solid cheek weld. Hey that's what snipers have so it must be the best. Well after a bit of shooting I noticed that the solid cheek weld introduce increase movement in my sight picture due to my pulse.

My suggestion is shoot a bit, and then shoot a bit more, then strap on a piece of foam to the comb of your stock and shoot a bit more. Keep shooting. Eventually you will find what works well for you.

Interesting tip, would seem to make sense though. I can see how your cheek in contact with the rigid cheekrest would actually cause some vibrations, whereas a soft foam on the cheekrest would dampen them. Building your own device to fix this wouldn't be too hard, I'm sure someone is probably marketing something similair. Anyways I've made my decision on the Leupold, yes it's expensive but has a good track record and I can use it on any other long range rifle projects later on too. Basically a one time investment for me.

Johnny: I have mounted a Leupold LR SF 6.5-20x 40mm scope on my T3 Varmint. The scope has a varmint hunter reticle. With this 30mm tube I use a set of low Millett angle loc rings. It fits very nice.
