long range scope

Whats long range to you?
USMC uses 10x for 1000 yard shooting.

I personally love the Nightforce brand of scopes. I have a 5.5-22x56 with 0-stop MLR retical on my Remington 700 and it works flawlessly.

I'll cast a vote for Smidt & Bender. The total elevation adjustment is in a single revolution of the turret, or in two revolutions depending on the specific style you order, and the movement of the POI is amazingly precise. There are no lash issues with the S&B's side focus turret as there are with some other makes.

It depends what your budget is, but the sky is the limit. I would say:
1)Bushnell Elite 4200 0r 6500 Tacticals
2) Leupold Mark 4 OR Ziess Conzest
3)Nightforce
4)Smidt & Bender
I think that is in the order of cost, and I believe all of the above track very well and are all very clear. I think when your buying optics 95% of the time you get what you pay for. My 0.02$$

I would first decide what it will be used for. A Nightforce 12-42X56 is a bad choice for a hunting rifle and great for a target rifle. Lower power and much lighter are all that is needed for hunting, and you can't beat the Bushnell Elite 3-9X

On my 300 Winchester I have a Mark 4 3.5-10x with the TMR reticle. I've often thought that maybe I should get something with more magnification but maybe not. It is primarily long range a hunting rifle so we'll see what happens.

X2 Obtunded
I have (2) 42 X Nightforce scopes for pinpoint accuracy but wouldn't be able to hunt with em.
I have a Fixed 10 X swarovski on a 50 BMG
and a Cheap 3-7 X Leupold on a .223 rem hunting type rifle (T3 lite) would be great for hunting.
I have a 6-24X Bushnell Tactical on an AR.

Find your end purpose and your end budget and the choice will be easier.

If this is a walkabout hunting rig, be careful about choosing a very high mag large bell scope. Great for paper punching but will be real boring when lugging it around the bush.

I have used Nikon Buckmaster and Monarchs, Elite 4000/4200 and some 3200's and can vouch for the excellent mechanicals. Just started playing with an Elite 6500 2.5X16 - 42mm which seems to be working great. Might just be a nice combo of high and low mag.

Very nice optics, so far mechanicals seem to be working ok, decent price and LOTS of elevation.

The Sightrons also have a good reputation for mechanicals and the scopes I have seen have really good optics for the money spent.

However, unless you are planning on shooting beyond 750yds, most any scope will have enough up. The only way to know for sure if the turrents work is to test it.

This should help you get your scope set up and tested. I have seen a number of high end big dollar scopes not dial repeatably. I now test every scope I use just to be sure.

What are you using it for ?

My 300 RUM hunting rifle wears a VX3 4.5-14x40 LR scope - awesome scope ! It has been to the custom shop for target turrets and TMR reticle. It is a deadly long range set up and works perfectly. I also own NF NXS and Bushnell 6-24x50Tac, and the leupold is the better all-around scope. The others are heavy and sit high on the rifle (50 mm obj.'s), and the NF is exceptional for LR shooting, but heavy. The bushie is OK too.
