Hey there.

Forgive me if this is in the wrong place. I'm currently from the peace region and I'm very much an avid long range shooter. In the peace country there's plenty of open crown land for a guy to head out to and set up a few gongs and smack em from 400 to 800yds. There's a few places out there where guys can take their Lapua magnums out to the mile they are meant to be shot at. Buts I'm a 1000yd and less guy.
Now I may be moving to Edmonton AB and it's giving me a bit of a panick attack as a shooter. I've looked around on the Internet and all the gun ranges surrounding the city only seem to go out to 300m. This isn't good enough for me. I love to dial and listen to that 3 second delayed "smack" as your round hits the 700yd gong.
There was a place called genesee or something that went to 800m which is very acceptable but I heard that part of the range was closed until further notice. Does anyone know if it's open again?

Crown land around the city seems too sketchy for a guy to go plinking. In the peace you could shoot all day and not worry about anything but from the stories the CL around Edmonton is full of people recreating, no way am I gonna shoot if there's a risk of someone walking or quadin onto my range, that Anti gun vibe from the city seems to spread out further into the surrounding countryside so I obviously don't want any trouble.

Spruce grove range seems nice. I would join that and it would definitely give me an excuse to buy an ar and practice there. But only 300m my precious bolt guns just won't have the room to stretch:(

So I'm asking, there must be folks who practice long range shooting around Edmonton. If so where do you go? Like an hour or two outside of town would be fine for me. But if there is no such range I am willing to drive a bit further.

If there are no ranges that can accommodate the long range shooter is there a group of like minded individuals that head out from Edmonton to somewhere to shoot?

Please help me out. In the peace I could just head out on a whim drive an hour out of town to some crown land and shoot to my hearts content at a range I wanted to. I can't go back to not shooting or having to shoot sub 300yds. All that cash spent on rifles and optics and reloading setups I fear I will lose my beloved hobby if I move to Edmonton from lack of range or vacant land to practice it.

Theyre not really long range. Theres plenty good short range ranges around that only go to 300yd. But i like to go farther. 100 is just good to make a zero for me. Drayton valley says its only 200 yards. Edson only goes to 300 yards. Hinton says it goes out to 500. But Hinton is a bit to go only for 500 yards.

There are no 800yd ranges around?

I think he is refering to the availability of suitable crown land in these areas....not the shooting ranges.

ya you are kinda SOL if you want a range that goes that far, my friends and I have a place that's about an hours drive and good for 2 km, Basically just study a map for a week then pick the spots that have potential, look them up on google earth. then if they still look good, go for a drive, that's what we did and it worked quite well. Now I'm looking for something closer. Stay tuned...

It's pretty crazy around these parts. I have to drive to my own little private quarter (where I have accesses to friends and family 1/2 sections) to shoot long range. I am not up for shooting on crown around the city simply because I tend to try and avoid people I don't know when shooting. My area is about 1.5 hours drive and, at the moment allows me to get out to 800 yards.

very nice! ya I'm not too thrilled about shooting on crown land around the city either. I looked around on google maps with the satellite and there doesn't seem to be any real big open areas. Drayton valley looked ok but most of it looked like private land. I'm gonna have to find a field to borrow for shooting like you but have no idea how to even pose such a question haha

You're welcome out my way, I have semi-permanant private range to 1100 yds.......but its almost 2 hrs drive from the city. PM if you ever want to line something up.

Jeromeo - you know you're welcome back any time....

Oooh is this an open invitation? I'd definitely be interested

From what was explained to me when I was out there with a friend, the 800m range at Genesee was taken down because the CFO wasn't happy with the size of the berms. He said that the club wants to rebuild the long range but he did not know timelines.

do you now until when?its been a while...

Note from the CHAS President (December 7, 2010):
"Trap, 25/50 & 100 are open as usual. 200 - 500 temporary closure for maintenance of backstops - must be raised to new height of 6 metres. 600 & 700 closed until redesigned & rebuilt. 800 closed until further notice."

Genesee range is currently to 300m, will be back to 800m next season. Far too wet this year to get the groundwork done. New regulations for ranges caused the closure. That being said, you could set up your own targets to those ranges there.

Set up your own targets at Genesee past the 300m berms? Yeah.....ok. Don't be filling people's heads with bs. try it and you'll be thrown out on your ass.
