Hi there,
I'm just getting into target shooting and I'm looking for somewhere within a 3 hr drive from Montreal where I can stretch out. My club's longest range is 100 yards.
Thanks for your help.

Check out the NCRRA. I'm not too sure how far civilians can shoot there but they have multiple 1000y ranges.
There's designated range times though which can be a bit of a hassle.

In Montreal, the only range I know of is Champs de tir Ruisseau Noir (200 yards, sitting position only), North of Montreal in Terrebonne. Google them for info.

There's a new (reactivated) range in the Eastern Townships. Last I heard they were up to 600 yards. Waiting for QPF approval for 1000 yards.

National Capital Region Rifle Association in indeed a civilian club. It's sister military club is the National Defense Headquarters Rifle Association, but a civilian can join that too. Better to contact a club officer first before showing up.

Target Rifle and F-Class 900 meter shoots are usually held Sunday mornings, and sometimes at 600 and 500 meters. 300 meter sessions are held on Wednesdays from around 1600 to dusk. Shooting is all prone position. I don't think there will be any activity until the spring now.

Service Rifle shooting takes place on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. They shoot year round between 100 and 400 meters, but not Thursdays in the winter, AFAIK.

Target pistol on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, depending on availability and interest. Service pistol on Sundays.

Go to the NCRRA website for more information.

There is also a range in Mansonville. A friend of mine is a member there and he tells me that they can shoot out to 1000yds.
If you want to shoot out to 600m then you can contact the PQRA they shoot at distances from 100yds to 600yds. They use the ranges at Valcartier. or like mentioned above NCRRA in Ottawa is great if you shoot to 1000yds. My son and I live in Montreal and we alternate between Ottawa and Valvartier every weekend. Sure puts mileage on the car.

I am so happy to live up north in Abitibi. Here at 20 minutes from home we can go in Hydro-Qc lines and shoot whatever distance we want. In the winter, we have thousands of frozen lakes. Talk about a nice 1500 range !

Is the Mount Bruno range gone?

It's still there, but I understand (via Jacques) that it hasn't been shot on for more than ten years, and it is unlikely there will be shooting on it in the future. A real shame, I've never seen it and would love to have shot on it at least once.

Mont St. Bruno (googlepmaps link) is a 1,000 yard range that's less than an hour from Montreal(!!)

Come to our club: Club de Tir de Bécancour. We offer 50M, 100M, 200M, 300M & 400M. The membership for our club is a small 30$! Our shooting benches are sheltered. We are "officially" open from August to the end of October but some of the club officials shoots almost year long. Go visit the FQT web site and look at our inbedded web page under the "Centre du Québec" region. I'm the President of the club and we welcome any new members! Cheers.

The only thing left at St Bruno is the "C" range 50m range. They shoot pistol (spring summer and fall). The cadets use it for Biathlon in the fall and Winter. All the shooting mounds have been leveled. In 2012, they tore apart the butts and the berm. In the fall and spring the cadets use the range for FTX's. They have also installed two soccer fields near the entrance which are used by the city of St Bruno...

Hello,
While browsing some good threads, I found this one and would be happy to pay you a visit when the weather be a little bit warmer.
Do you have any caliber limitation ?
I am equipped from .223 to .50 BMG but need to know the rules before moving heavy babies for nothing ;)
Thank you.
Ed.

Actually, we do have caliber limitation to 338 and because of our bullet stopper which will not stop a 50 cal bullet. As for a visit, please PM me or call the Club phone number (819) 448-2567. Our membership will go up a little this year to 40$ as we now face a much higher rent. Thanks for your interest in our club and looking forward to eventually meet you. Cheers!

That is depressing. When the Army closed St Hubert, they lost all interest in defence installations around Montreal.

During one of the Indian Wars, I remember driving out to the range for a day trip. No lock on the gate, just drive in. I stopped at a discrete distance when I saw the red flags, and noticed some green guys at the 600mound shooting bolt actions from the low-prone position. I recognized one face from the DCRA service matches. He was about as ugly a visage as possible, but wearing an MWO wreath and soft cap. A year or so later we were booked to shoot our annual qual's but the range was shut down THAT DAY.

In the early '00s a friend of mine was a historic reenacting advisor on a docudrama about French-Canadians in WWI said the range was taken over by the movie company. They dug a couple of trenches on the right side, and little by little the range has been deactivated. (In the CF's defence, the recruits train at Camp Farnham and the reserves don't get much ammunition. Valcartier's ranges are still in good shape.)

there's the pionnier out east of montreal. I think they go out to 300m for civilians and 800m for cops

Yes , only 200m for civilians. I took the membership 2 years ago and they were trying to get approval for 300m but it seems that nothing is done so far to increase the shooting distance.
In another way, I do no figure out why civilians are not allowed to use the 800m prone range.
Too sad !
