Long Range Shooting Schools and Instruction

Went to RFMA level 1 course a couple years ago, thinking of going to the level 2 next year. Anyone here taken it that can speak on it?

I also went to RFMA last spring for Level 1 training, it was really good and they were all great guys, highly recommend it to anyone. We planned on going back this year for level 2 but did not get a chance, maybe next year. They also offer some neat other courses that I think would be tons of fun to take too.

I did all three Rob's Rifle courses + Advanced terrain course and King of 2 Miles Canada, as others mentioned here, it is really top school, elite level, worth traveling from Ontario, just be aware that is very easy to get addicted to ELR distances :) . In Ontario - Ontario Rifle Association added this year PRS (center rilfle, up to 400y) and steel targets practices with coaching up to 1000y, for very reasonable cost and very good coaches.

Just saw an ad for Furlong's shooting school schedule for 2025 on FB. A search should turn that up easily enough for the OP. - dan
I signed up last week. Pumped for it!

Next question...

Do I rent, build or use what I have?

1. Rent a Cadex Rifle for $300 ish for the weekend.
2. Build something for it, if so what? probably a .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor
3. Use what I have - My "best", rifle for this weekend would be my hunting rifle - 7 saum, Manners EH1 Stock, Proof Carbon Barrel, just picked up a Atacr 4-16x42 Mil C for it.. It would be nice to put my hunting rifles through the paces and learn what it can do at that range. However I am concerned its not the right rifle for the job, too many shots in succession and may heat up the barrel too much and it doesn't have an adjustable stock. Thoughts?

You will also have to use their ammo if you rent their gun.

Your Saum will work just fine as long as you have a 20 MOA rail on it Partner!

Stock is easy to deal with. Just get one of those wrap-around padded cheek rests. You can pad it as much as you like to be comfortable.

My shooting partner had a Desert Tech that heated up fast and started spraying shots like crazy. He was relegated to 5-shot strings with more cooling down time.

He couldn’t hit 1000m so I let him shoot my 6GT. Mine didn’t blink, because it was built for this.

The instructors reminded him that you can learn more when spotting than shooting, and that’s something to consider.

Build a rifle if you want one anyhow, or go with your fav hunting rifle and a willingness to learn. You win either way. 👍

For sure what you have will work.

What is your goal for the course? Shoot better longer range, hunting, or getting into long range??

If you are getting into long range shooting, then I would build, buy one and you will get to use it, and be set up for it. If you need an excuse to get a rifle. $5K for rifle then some nice glass $3-$4K then ammo to shoot it. There are some nice used rigs on here for decent pricing as well.

If its just for getting better at shooting/hunting long distance then use what you have and get to know it better. Just limit to 5 shot strings on the carbon barrel. What I found I can get away with before too much heat. Get one of those portable air mattress pumps and you can run that between strings for quicker cooling.

I have something like this in my range bag for summer shooting, with a 2 ft clear tubing attached so the pump can sit near and tube into the chamber. Works great.

Interesting.

For me, 200 yards has always qualified as long range.

Perhaps I’ll give it a try.

I was talking with one of Rob's team up here a few years back , and asked him what a person needed for personal accuracy parameters to take his course .
He told me that if a person could hold between a one and one and a half minutes at 100 off a bench, he would be good for the course .
The rifle and scope combination obviously needs to reach to 1,000 yards , and most will with a 20 MOA rail on the rifle.
