long range shooting ( with pics )

I have tons of fun shooting gophers out at the 200ish range. I wont claim one shot hits every time but you can get quite consistent. Last summer I had one good gopher shoot and was smashing lots of them out around that 200 mark. they are a little hard to see with the 2-7x on my savage mark 2 heavy barrel but the 3x9 does good on my 10-22. The hit pecentage with the savage is way higher than my 10-22 guess i need to get a shielen barrel on it.

I didnt shoot with my Savage so far this summer, the rifle is under construction!!!!
I redid the stock in fiberglass did a polishing and new blueing on the barrel and I am waiting for a new scope from Mystic precision. a Weaver t-36.

I'm going to try Lapua ammo ( if I found some!!!!) and expecting to do some nice group at 330y with the new rifle.

it should be ready for august, can wait to try it and post some picture of it....

Did this one at 300 yards on Saturday during a lull in the wind. Speedjunkiesracing was there.

These were the ones I was getting with the wind blowing:

I shot these Saturday July 10 AM. There was considerable mirage and the wind was 3-6 o/c 5-25km/h. 100m this is on the 50m target printed in gray scale. 2 sighters and 20 for score - I scored this a 190-7x using best edge scoring and after plugging a couple. Duration was about 17 minutes.
Rem 40x 36x Leup. bipod and rear bag Lapua Pistol Trainer. Targets were shot bottom L-R top L-R. Conditions had really changed by the time of the last bull top right. I'm confident this target could be cleaned at 100m with the highest class of rifles the rules allow if one waited for conditions.

Reality is that conditions usually aren't ideal when the match is being shot...

That's good. But, you're scoring it based on 50M size. The 100M target is twice as big. Your score is actually 200.10X

I put a another bolt on the back of my Mark II but had to hide it under the trigger guard.
Not the best. How did you do yours?
How do you lighten the trigger on one? Mine is old not one of the new accutriggers?

For all the prospective long range shooters - you may want to use a variable power scope , as a fixed high power may work against you. Something in the range of 4-30x should be ideal. I should have referred to my log book from last year's 200yd Island shoot. The 36x I used was too much in the mirage.
I scored better in the iron sight stage. Live and learn !

Here is my first 200 meter group. Just using Amercian Eagle 40g.
I was aiming dead center and did not adjust anything.

Should have put more targets up but that 300 meter gong was callling.

Sunday got out for a bit and got my dope for 25m and 50m.

Cant wait for my 20 moa rail to get here.
Shooting that 300 meter gong was great with a 22lr.

The gong is 12" x 12" I think. For the 300 meter gong I did not have enough elevation. I just aimed at the roof of the gong with my lowest moa dot on my scope.
After about 40 rounds I was able to hit the 300 meter gong five out of five times,
once I had my hold over figured out.

My long range setup. I am using brown box Eley for now, may switch to Lapua as it is hard to find the Eley anywhere. If anyone has a source on some PM me. I can shoot out to 300 yards. At 200 I get consistent groups, past that it starts to get a little more random. used to shoot shotgun shells at 100 but that got boring and started shooting SKS brass instead. Like others have said, 100 yards with it is pretty boring now.
I recently got a 242 yard head shot on a gopher (no e-brag). Took 2 sighter shots, but dead gopher is dead. Lots of one shot kills at 150ish. Need to get out again soon, I got the itch bad right now.

^^^^^I'm surprised by the amount of Coca Cola I see being consumed by "precision" rifle shooters. Not only is it filled with sugar but It also contains a fair bit of caffeine. Not the best beverage for shooting consistent groups. There's a guy who posts a lot in Precision Rifle forum who's sig line shows a pic of him shooting at a bench with a 2L bottle of Coke! He must be vibrating by the end of his shooting session!

When I shoot "long" range rimfire or at shorter range for groups I try to cut out sugar and caffein for a couple days before. It's tough to do because I'm addicted, quite literally, to Coke Zero and the ample Caffeine it provides.:(

Generally, in reasonable quantities,
caffeine does not negatively affect the shooting abilities of
bench shooters, prone position shooters, etc.,
but it largely depends on the person as well.
