long range shooting

Hay Incursore101, welcome to the Site, don't worry about stupid people, they are all over he freaking place, just ignore them, they have no confident in themself.

Thanx abunch GunBoy much appreciated. I certainly did not want to sound like a prude or a know it all, just relaying some thoughts on the possibilities of long range shooting...anyways i have seen people shoot much better than me, some as a soldier and some as a civilian.

Many of you folks owe it to yourself to ACTUALLY shoot and practice at 600 yards. It is not very difficult. Sheeesh.

Would you be comfortable with a box stock standard hunting rifle using factory Norma 150 grain (Scirrocos I believe)?
You would use this setup to take game 600 yards and farther?

At least that is what I understood the OP to say?

Not saying it can't or shouldn't be done, I'm saying the OP needs to consider both a more detailed and more systematic approach.

You just told a bunch of guys that have been shooting forever to get real?

Just checking? :p

I love it when this topic comes up on this forum! My biggest problem with shooting farther than 300 is I don't like the magnification or glass quality of my scope.

Truth is the norma ammo that i used to use was at that time 15yrs ago the hottest you could buy, on the box the bullet velocity was around 3200fps (not bad for a factory load) 7mm rem mag it had a high bc therefore pretty flat shooting, and so 600yrd shots very doable nonetheless i can understant the sceptics.

The only fellow I know that did try and make it was a hunting buddy that used a 7mm Rem Mag. I saw the trophy and photos. He was Caribou hunting. My guess as was his shot range around 400 yards open country though.

The longest I've had was around 165 to 170 across a bog, moose hunting. The rifle was zeroed for 200 yards. 3006. Moose dropped like a rock . Was set at 9 power on the scope.. I would not for me with that scope and rifle do more than 300.

Shooting paper at 600 can be easy . . . sometimes, but shooting game beyond 600 is another matter entirely. Those who have made the investment in time, equipment, and training and who get personal satisfaction out of long range game shooting don't need anyone's approval. But to suggest that just anyone can do it, or that gear can make up for experience and skill is niether accurate or responsible. Knowing when you can't make the shot trumps knowing when you can.

Has anyone out there ever attempted a 600+ yard shot at game from a regular hunting rifle?

Yes. I killed my first deer at a laser ranged 575yds with a more or less stock Win Mod 70 in 30-06. The ammo was handloaded 168gr match stuff and the rifle was stock except for a bedding job and a tuned trigger.

It was a one round kill.

I had shot the rifle in competition to 800m so a 600yd shot wasn't too much of a stretch. The key is to practice at distances greater than you plan to hunt.

I would prefer to practice with the rifle and loads and then make such a determination. I am certain the answer would be a resounding yes!

What the hell does "get real" have to do with anything? I am an advocate of ACTUAL practice.

I've done it, with what to me are very ordinary rifles. Just this last April I shot a cull red stag in Argentina at a lasered 568 yards with a Mark V, rebarreled to .300 Win Mag in a Gaillard #2. No bipod, no sling, no Kestral, no ipod, no turrets, no nothing. No problem, but there was also next to no effective wind.
On the same trip I had to pass or wait on shots at 50 yards. Conditions dictate whether a shot is good or not.

200m, no problems, 300m Ok I've done it a few times and even 400m, dropped a moose at that range, also using a 7mm Rem Mag in perfect conditions. But for me thats about it.

I like those 50m bang flop shots, easier to recover the animal. I hunt for fun not for work.

Ok, so lets look at what I was shooting:7mm rem mag ,norma ammo 150gr @3200fps in a winchester mod 70XTR circa 1978, bullet B.C .420, at aprox. 2000ft elevation, sight zero at 200yrds, bullet drop at 800yrd 139" (thats pretty hard to achieve) but.....at 600yrd the drop is around 60" and still showing 1900fps velocity and around 1320lbs of energy a very doable kill shot. Always taking in consideration wind drift and so on.

It is difficult to attain accurate, repeatable holdover with a hunting scope reticle. It is possible. I prefer scopes with elevation hash marks.

As always, I advocate practice at the actual distances you wish to engage a target. It is also imperative to know the body dimensions of the animal target.

Hi Jason. How's your shooting coming along? lol

buy a rifle from the best of the west people from the hunting channel with those husqemaw scopes they kill animals from over 1000 yards or so they say with a 7mm

You see, i knew that if i posted something intelligent someone out there that is obviously a lot smarter than anyone else would answer. I bet you were the kid in school, that during ask a question time always put his hand up only to ask the teacher if he could go to the bathroom.

If you have any thing to posted or question to ask, do it, don't let those that needed to be ignore get in the way.

You are right. No sense posting or asking questions if all you get are dumb replies. I thought we were all here for the same reason, because we love guns and the shooting sports, so far as i am concerned we are still the best, most honest people anywhere and i am proud to have been allowed to join this thing of ours..cheers

By the way "jasonburnsdundee" I probably may have mis-understood the meaning of your reply.... my sincerest apology.

Doesn't matter where you go, there are people like that everywhere, don't let them bother you, or getting you upset, just ignore.

let get back to topic, you post on 7remmag is very believable, that why I said something, it got a very high BC for some bullet, like the 162amax, at 3000fps it by far one of the flattest shooting round, make it very easy to drop game at 600meter, the only thing I am shooting these day are 260rem, and 308, these caliber are easy to shoot, with 260 rem out to 700meter, hitting 6" gong size is easy on a calm day, but when windy, take some guessing and estimating. I am looking at getting a 7mm remmag, with this caliber , hitting gong out to 700meter make alittle more easy, even in windy day.
