Long Rifles in a Magnum?

I have a Savage 93btvs coming next week and I was just wondering, is there any issues with shooting long rifles in a magnum? You can shoot shorts in a LR, so does the same apply to rifles chambered for magnums? This will be my first magnum..

Jesus... Only what is stamped on the barrel!
I can't believe this question is raised so often.f:P:

x2 I posted the following in a recent thread, and I feel very strongly about it;

Data Stamp on the barrel. Read it, follow it, don't deviate from it. There seems to be some temptation to "test the water" where rimfires are concerned, but the potential for damage/injury is huge when you tinker with using ammunition that differs from what's indicted on the data stamp.

I'm not one for "let's have more rules", but I sort of wish this sort of discussion was discouraged on CGN. There seems to be some traction with these conversations in the rimfire forum, but you don't hear anyone (in other forums) ask questions like; "can I shoot a .223 round in a gun chambered for .22-250?" Anyone here like gambling with their eyes...or even their lives?

Not trying to be over-dramatic, but there is no such thing as a "minor" gun-related accident.

Shoot safe everyone.

Better to ask than NOT to ask, so I'm glad you did before you hurt yourself.

Ok, thanks. I wasn't aware that the magnums also had a larger diameter.

Normally I would agree with this however this is not always the case. Case in point: .22 shorts in a barrel stamper "LR" or "Long Rifle". Have you ever seen a .22 chambered for only shorts or a barrel stamp that states "shorts"? If so, please indicate which ones because I am yet to even hear of one. Another example is a 12 guage chambered for 3 1/2 inch shells. They can still chamber and safely fire 3" and 2 3/4" shells.

Better to ask the questions then test it out for yourself and risk equipment damage, personal injury or even worse, injury to others.

Actually, not all that rare. Certainly never 22lr popular, but definitely more than 17hm2 ever had.

Just holding the 2 rounds side by side should quickly answer the original question, though. 22lr, has a heeled bullet the same diameter as the case (.223") and 22 magnum has a bullet seated within the case, like a standard straight walled case (.224"). The 22 magnum is obviously because of this, significantly fatter.

If your life depended on you firing a 22lr in a 22magnum, you'd be unlikely to be hurt, the case would likely split, gas might escape, but the bullet would go down the barrel and into whatever it needed to. I wouldn't do it other than that, however.
