Just want a few opinions on this. A guy I know was telling me he shot a bull elk at 450 yards with his .243. I know it is possible but how likely is it for an average hunter...not a sharp shooter?

I guess knowing the guy kind of made me wonder about the story a little  and I don't have any experience with the .243.

It's possible (discounting the 243 questionable power at that range) but unless I saw the laser reading i'd tak it with a grain of salt. It's amasing how short the strides get when someone is pacing off a shot.

Anything is possible, including a B.S. story about shooting an elk with a .243 past 100 yards!!Bullet weight and energy just ain't there for long range.
let's face it, accurcay is first, but the bullet has to do its job after it gets there!

I have personaly witnessed a deer fall to a .243 at over 500 yards, Bang flop, one shot kill, so it is not impossible. I paced it off as well as two other guys.

Believe it or not it can happen :runaway: (I wouldnt do it myself, but to each his own)

I don't know if its true or not, i just think that an ethical hunter owes more to a n animal than a high risk shot like this, how many times would this type of shot result in wounding and a slow agonizing death for the animal, I just think we need to do all we can to harvest the animal cleanly and without undue suffering. I think the shooter should have let it go or get closer for a better shot.

Alot of people actually dont know how far 450yrds is.I have asked people to show me how far 500yrds is and they point at a land mark like 200/300yrds away at most.Go figure

But it could have happened.

I did an experiment last year as i had no idea how far 100 yds,200 yds was in the bush. So i measured it out with my 100 foot tape measure, set up markers. 200 yds is a long friggin way. I very much doubt his 450 yd story and even attempting a shot like this with a 243 is assenine.

450 Feet?
:D that's what I was thinking. Thanks for reenforceing my original feelings. I don't think it was even 450 feet to be honest with you ;) . It made me think even less of the guy for saying he tried a shot that long, like a lot of you say, it won't do anything but wound or hurt at that range. Thanks god for 8 years of football...I know well what 110 yards looks like :p

Is it possible? Yes, however I wouldn't recommend it. It is very irresponsible, unethical and a low percentage shot to take on live game of that size and nature.

Gophers and coyotes are good sized game for that rifle at that range but thats about it. Mabey even antelope and whitetails but I would prefer something with a bit more punch like a .264 Win Mag or the like.

I've seen wonderful shots @ 500 yds, BUT saying is ok to do it will put the guy who "thinks" he has sniper blood in the same ballpark with the guy who took 3000 shots that year ... 300 of which at that distance or more.

It is foolish to proceed to do so, because the guys who can shoot that good don't brag about it , and they are the only ones that would be able to assess if the weather conditions are good for that shot...

I have a "buddy" wh thinks he canshoot 500 m no problem, because he knows how much the bullet is going to drop at that distance. <<<It is written on the box>>> he says.

Write him off as a bull####ter.... guys like that are a dime a dozen and they are a waste of your time.
Or you can challenge him to show you how good his gun shoots at the range @450 yards... he likely won't hit the backboard!
