Long story short

Hey folks.

So here's the deal...

long time wargamer - airsoft mainly... I don't know if that's a bad word around here, but that's what produced my interest in real-steel shooting.

I was living in Thunder Bay for a while, where members of the local airsoft community were kind enough to treat me to a private shooting session at the local field.

And so, I've picked up the course book for the non restricted PAL.

I'm in Brantford, ON now and am looking forward to taking the test and getting an entry level shotgun for use on the field...

I shot a variety of weapons, from AR's to 12 guages.. a 12 guage is first on my list of purchases both for versatility and cost.

Thanks for the use of this forum and hope to see some of you...

youonlywish.

P.S. - get your RPAL too, it's often cheaper to take the rpal course at the same time, it opens up some career opportunities, and allows you to buy all the fun restricted guns.

Everyone I know who just got their PAL has eventually gotten their RPAL too.

My love of guns has driven me to marry a women who makes more money than me so I can afford to keep my hobbies.

Welcome to CGN, You'll get addicted!

Some questions

A few questions for those who can awnser...

I've been spending the majority of my free time cruising through the forums, looking for awnsers... to no avail.

-How does the 'buying used guns online' deal actually WORK?

-Is there much of a price difference?

-Is there a LIST of weapons that a non-restricted PAL will allow me to purchase?

-Can they be shipped normally (non-restricted, and no, I havn't finished reading the course handbook yet...)

Thanks!

I come from a forum that is not very noob-friendly. I thank all who were gracious enough to welcome me.

When I got my PAL it cost something like $40 extra to take the restricted. Might as well just get both considering that like 85% of the restricted course is the same content as the non-restricted.

Generally speaking, you can purchase most anything that isn't a handgun, an AR-15, or a semi-auto centerfire rifle that has a barrel shorter than 18.5" with a non-restricted PAL.

First things first, if you prefer us to behave rudely and belittle your every utterance, we can accommodate. But it will cost you ... and you'll need to flag your postings with some sort of Kick Me emoticon.

#1 - on the Equipment Exchange you send a message to the poster, ask questions or breathlessly declare SOLD! Discuss shipping and payment. Give the seller your legal name and PAL number. He calls the 1-800-we-know-guns ladies. They give him a reference number. He gives you the number. You call the ladies. If all goes well, they give you the transfer number. You give that to the seller. He ships the firearm. Complicated, but those are the rules.

#2 - some stores sell for more than the exchange, some sell for more. It is the buyer's obligation to know high and low prices ...

#3 - the lists are the opposite. The Dept of Justice publish the Orders in Council that prescribe the make and model, cartridge and measurements of the Prohibited firearms. Restricted guns have another set of conditions. The unrestricted list is everything that is left.

#4 - shipping is the easiest part. Canada Post will ship all firearms. There are rules about signatures required for delivery. Several times a year some postie helps himself to a new gun, so get insurance.
