Thought I would share this with the experts and see what they think.
I bought a brand new unfired Winchester Model 70 that I believe was made in 2005-6 it was stored in the factory Winchester box out of the plastic bag.
I decided to sell the rifle as I had a few in that caliber.
The buyer informed me that the checkering on the pistol grip seemed to be flawed looking at the pics I had taken some time ago you could not see this.
The buyer returned the rifle and I noticed what he was talking about so refunded him the full purchase price.
After taking a close look at the rifle I noticed small brown dust in the factory box and some of the forearm checkering seemed a little off.
Conclusion: After years of storage the wood is drying out the fine points of the checkering are the first to be noticed.

No I don't believe it was as it wasn't be moved around except when shipping
Put a coat of Schaftol on this morning, Soaked it up like it was on vacuum
 
Thanks for the post, I've got a long term stored 32-40 unfired John Wayne commemorative that I should look at and show some love to in the way of oiling. Glad you brought my attention to it!
